Incredible story..
I was there that day. I was standing next to Mcgrath while Art Eckman was interviewing him.

Thanks for sharing. every time I hear Alice in chains I think of Doug Henry. I think most of you know why!
And yea, how about his wife listening to her gut instinct on that one. What a women.
Awesome read. I wonder if modern works suspension would have made a diff in his injury. I’m saying no way. But made me wonder.

Ahhh... gotcha. I'm gonna watch that now. I took a break from moto for a couple of years right about the time that the Crusty vids were big and must have missed terrafirma. Thanks.
I remember watching that race countless times on VHS as a teen. Recorded everything back then. Couldn't believe he launched it off that....
Snoqualimie,
Thanks so much for posting the link to that. It's funny, I wrote that story three years ago and it first appeared in the print magazine.
As gut wrenching of a tale as it is, I love writing stuff like that, trying to find out every detail about a single moment in time.
A little behind the scenes info: The interviews with Stacey and Doug were done in CT, in person, together, over a bottle of wine. 20 years later and their memories of the day were so, so strong.
I have another project coming up that I'm taking a similar approach with.
Thanks again,
Brett

Great piece of writing there. That was a moment in moto history that I'll never forget. I was just telling my kid about this a couple of months ago. Doug Henry is a true legend and one bad mofo.

Yes, Terrafirma 1 is the video. Scrub to the end. It's the last video part. The AIC album was Jar Of Flies and the song is "Nutshell". They also had a '93 MX recap video set to AIC's "Them Bones" off the album Dirt. It was awesome.

Thanks for the info. I can get lost in AIC and watching old race footage.
