Maybe I should choose a 'sport' with money in it?!

Edited Date/Time 9/2/2019 10:44am

Not that I'm likely ever to put the work in required to be the worlds best at anything, but the two sports Ive chosen to devote my life to (Moto & Road cycling) it appears there's naff all money to be won! (Relatively speaking..)

Maybe we should've all concentrated on being a 'gamer'?!

There's several youtube gamers that make between 14 and 20 million a year from playing their games on youtube. DanTDM made 18 million in 2018.

Money isn’t everything. I haven’t made a penny from riding & racing. For me it’s all about fun

Perspective: How much competition in terms of numbers does the video game guy have vs the cyclist?....

Maybe you should go for a sure thing.
Start selling insurance, build a clientele, like now.
10 years, yer set.

Another interesting point.

Similar to MXGP- would you say that about them riders? “They’re on a professional team and getting paid well” “so don’t need prize monies” ?

Yeah I think what that picture is missing is that it's the most popular videogame in the world and 40 million people tried to get into that tournament.

My son started earning a salary at 14 to play Call of Duty. From 14-18, never paid for an xbox, controllers, headsets, anything associated with gaming. All given to him. Along with $50k a year to "train" on C.O.D.

Stfu....your kids making 50k a year to play games ? 250k from 14-18? Now I can’t bitch about factory amateur kids.

I respect the video game guys that do the competitions. I don't follow it by any means, but the respect comes from their ability to visualize the entire game and what other players are doing in real time. These people are not dummies.

Finished up the podcast with John Carmack this week, developer of Doom, Quake, Rage, etc.. Rocket Scientist and product developing genius.

John Was saying the the Video Game Competition in south Korea dwarfs the spectator numbers of US football, UFC and a lot of other major sports. I had no idea.

The video game business is only getting bigger. For example Grand Theft Auto 5 was released in 2013 and made $800 million the day it was released and hit $1 billion in sales on the 3rd day.

As of May 2019 that game sold 110 million copies. That's over $6 billion in revenue.

I don't think video games are a sport but it's safe to say that market is still growing. If you're good enough to make a living at it, go for it.

Video game tournaments.

Playing video games is not a 'sport'.

I don’t think many would argue that it is a sport. But it is a “thing.” A very profitable “thing” at that.

The video game industry is a $139 Billion industry. That's bigger than Film ($42B ), Music ($19B ), the NFL ($15B ), NBA ($8B ), MLB ($10B ), and NHL ($5B ) combined.

BTW - The cyclist is Egan Bernal. He won this little race over in Europe called the Tour de France. Maybe you've heard of it? He was one of the co-leaders for Team Ineos (fromly Team SKY) which is a powerhouse team in cycling with an approximately $550million in advertising value. They're like tike the F1 - Factory Mercedes Team of cycling. haha

Besides, you shouldn't get into a sport because of the money, you should get into a sport because you love it. (Eventually though it will turn into a job. haha )

A lot of the top video game dudes and dudettes work out with an excercise program so that they stay sharp. No joke.

My Grandad said I should have done speedway, at least I would have made a living he said. I must admit that I loved motocross though.

If making money is your lifes goal your not a motocrosser. If spending every dollar you have, being broke and getting injured now and then interests you stick with it. Wouldn't trade my life for another.

So often you see here, and elsewhere, people saying they'll direct their kids into other sports to have more hope of making (big) money.

Well, they seem to forget that the (other) sports they think their kids (and they) will make a motza on, have so many more people reaching for that same (limited) batch of golden rings. And, pretty much the same, piddly percentage of participants end up making money from nearly all Sports.

It's all relative. That people are aghast (and, I'll put my hand up to that) that others make money from sports that are unimpressive to them - well, you get the same sort of 'unimpressed' people from other sports / pastimes looking down their noses at whatever Sport / pastimes you / we are into.

Certainly, our MC sport does have more risk to it than many others, but hell, I've heard (and this is just from my seeing reports of it on TV and the Press - I've played 'puter games about 10 times in my entire life) of a lot of people topping themselves over their E Game pressures and failures.

You do your Sport / pastime for fun, and, for many of us, to make our lives more complete / better in general. And, you are just one of the many, that allow the very, very few, to make a living from it.
