Apparently I just have a bigger kid. He trains hard and eats right he’s just larger. I was wondering at what weight does a 65 rider stop being competitive. He’s 57in tall and 105lbs unsuited. Bike is fresh and well maintained. Still completely stock.

Being completive has little to do with his weight.

How old is he? If the bikes dialed you can still rip a start. We’re running a YZ65 and the stock springs and valving should support a bigger kid. We had to go down a spring rate and back compression off. Have you tried to put him on an 85 yet? If he’s close to aging out of the 65 class anyway it might be a good idea to just move him up or run both classes without any expectations in the higher class.

There's a reason 65 and 85 classes overlap in age, both have a 7-11 age class. Kids in this age bracket just vary wildly in size. Your kid is definitely big enough to ride an 85. You just have to make a decision considering the other factors such as skill and maturity if he's better off on a 65 or 85.

Your kid is bigger than some of these dudes on factory 450s. Get that a kid an 85

Thanks everyone. We do have a new 85. But I hate moving him to the 10-12 class. Is what it is though. He’s racing 7-9 now. And he literally carries the front wheel over a falling gate. And still can’t holeshot the 50lb kids.

I just did a father/son race with my kid on his 65..thing pulled me around pretty damn good at 170lbs on a bumpy track..couple dads even sent some fairly large doubles. Was definitely impressed with those little bikes. That said watching the fast kids they are all under 80lbs.

No doubt they are sketchy fast. I’ve tuned mine to death. Tried every possible gear ratio. If I get it low enough to get the start he’s riding around in 6th.
