I was reading the thread about 500cc riding techniques and I saw a picture of a fat guy on a KX500 hauling the mail... reminded me of Marco Baker at 59th and Douglas. Does anyone remember him?
The Shop
...and Whisperin' Smith is nothing but a legend! I never have seen the guy, but I have heard stories going back over 20 years about him.

Whispern, the worlds fastest fireman! I dont even know where to begin with the whispern stories!
best part of 59th, was over the years, the sheer number of mx legends that have came thru there. The local, lived there or were close talent, Reynard, Marley, Cliff Palmer, Trey Ownes, Whispern, Terry Osbounre, Dennis Ownes, Jack Brassfeild, Waylen Litchfield, Homer Wolfslayer, Greg Brown, Eubanks, Chan Baker, Clifford Adonpte (can never remember how to spell his name, but his dad Topper was one of the nicest guys I ever met) Cooper, Brett Schumate... then you had the guys you would see from time to time,
Windham, Chicken, Lamson, Boyer, Pastrana, Stephson, Charlie Boggart, Walker, man, too many to list!
During the summer, there would be the night time national that was a big race, but the Dr Pepper race was HUGE. We look up one tuesday evening in 92 or 93, here comes cooper, and the rest of team suzuki. 1998, Reynard and Cooper battling it out in the 125 pro race, last corner, Cooper, NAILS robbie, then they get back to the pitys, Cooper comes stomping over and literally proceeds to cuss robbie out for letting him let cooper even get that close! HE was like, "Dont you EVER let someone do that to you! You left the door wide open!" and Robert is around the side of the box van crying hes laughing so hard... there is NO whining when Coop is around! So next race, robbie, goes balistic fast, for about 3 laps out of 10. Then we are all like wft is he doing, he about ate poop just then, wth? He broke a foot peg off the right side.... gee, never heard a 98 suzuki doing that (rolls eyes) SO here comes coop, robbie is havign none of it! 59th actually had damn good whoops in the day, robbie is hitting them so fast hes sitting down and still skimming. Cooper, he should go into the motivational busniess!
man, 59th and tuesday nights... THAT was the best thought! if i could go back it would be to then!
And Born2Slow, I still see Home Woolslayer out at the airport pretty often, well before I moved to WashingtonDC a couple months ago. And believe it or not, he has the same amount of legend at the airport that he does at the motocross track.
Oh yeah, you misspelled "Homer"! :-)
Secondly- I don't know what happened at the Dr. Pepper race in '93- I was on the sidelines with a new baby girl. But 1992 is when Coop brought Steve Lamson out. I remember getting caught up behind a guy on an RM250 for a little over a lap in practice. I couldn't pass that bastard for nothing. Just when I started to gas out a little, I caught a glimpse of his chest protector. Lamson 16. Then I was blown psychologically. He blew my doors off the next lap. I got 4th in 250 Intermediate at that race. That tells you how fast you had to be to do well at 59th!
no am or expert, a b or c.. if you are voer 25, here you go.
The cub races were awesome... honda cub, full plastic body work, lets have a half time race on them! Neil Reed lets little johnny marley ride his, until he hits the whoops and was skimming them ROFL.... the was the end of that!
or one night, when neil, chan, and laura all were partners, there was this drunk mini-boyfriend there. They had already been into it with him for his behavior towards this 6 or 7 year old kid.... total white trash dude, no shirt, greasy hair, go fast while i get drunk and throw dirt clods at you kind of guy. So race ends, kid doesnt do what drunk ass loser boyfriend thinks he should have, meets him at exit gate and is yelling, grabbing his helmet, abusive... before ANYONE can even remotely make a move, here goes Chan flying past us on a Cub, he hits the brakes for MAYBE 1 second and steps off at FULL run and clocks this guy so hard you could hear it! And everyone that saw it.... well, all we saw was a slip and fall by a drunk guy that hit his head on the ground lol
plus, legends? legends you want? well, there was Midpack, me, and gene brag! you havent lived until you saw the 3 of us noob it up and have 3 way WARS for the lead in the beginner class in 92! EPIC.... or maybe its just epic to me/us!
He was a cool guy.
Pit Row
I guess he thought he was going to clean up the Pro classes since he was a Suzuki support rider.
I think his best moto was a 6th. Humbling experience I'd say.
here was how you knew if it was time to move up at 59th. you would start winning your class, goto texas, run the same class, and if you got a top 5, ok, move up. Otherwise, you would be a winning intermediate at 59th, and that was the only place you were a winning intermediate! lol
it had at one point an over and under bridge... matthes you listening? Great whoops EVERY week, the tunnel jump late in its life that you see robbie doing on those terrafirma videos, GOOD dirt for what is normally clay in the area. Great jump faces, good pits... was just a great place!
He always had really tricked out bikes and a nice box van. I heard he quite MX to race Jet Ski's. I'll bet Robbie or Robert might know where he is / what he's up to.
And I remember Jeremy Abney... what was his brother's name?
Oh man, when pro riders would show up there and get their asses handed to them on a platter, that was the best.
Andy Bowyer I'm sure has some great MCR stories.
It was known to the world as Motocross Raceways. To us it will ALWAYS be 59th.
Some of my best memories in life come from that little intersection on the outskirts of The City.
Johnny Abney. We now go to the races with our kids. That Shawnee crew was pretty big. McQuerry, Boudoin, Ty Love, The Abney bros.
Remember when Homer jumped into the scoring tower from the tunnel jump? Lat time I saw him at the airport I asked him about that... said it was terrifying... also asked him about being banned from AMA SX for life. A good story for a later date.
Post a reply to: Marco Baker, anyone from OK remember?
