Marco Baker, anyone from OK remember?

Edited Date/Time 1/27/2012 8:04pm
I was reading the thread about 500cc riding techniques and I saw a picture of a fat guy on a KX500 hauling the mail... reminded me of Marco Baker at 59th and Douglas. Does anyone remember him?

the only ones I remember hauling on a 500 at 59th was david eubanks and chan baker. And david didnt ride a 500 for very long. Oh and whispern smith showing up on a yzf400 when they first came out and riding it like a 125 stroker, we were all waiting to see the piston shoot up thru the tank and hit him on the chin! ROFL

Hey my dad ran into David Eubanks on a trail in Colorado this summer! We see him around form time to time, but who'da thunk you'd run into someone you knew on the TImberline!

But Marco was hugely fat and rode that KX500 about as grecefuly as Dvid Bailey, and nearly as fast too! My dad still talks about him!

David Eubanks is one of the good guys, in my book and his wife, Vicki is a scoring whiz.
...and Whisperin' Smith is nothing but a legend! I never have seen the guy, but I have heard stories going back over 20 years about him.

vickie... david is literally one of my best friends. The crew is me (greg mcquerry), mike ollison, david, little kenny, and rooster. We goto taylor park co every year on a big guys trip for a week (i missed this year). And my birthday is on the 9th, A1, steaks, 102 degree pool, and live sx, and all will be there... its on!

Whispern, the worlds fastest fireman! I dont even know where to begin with the whispern stories!

best part of 59th, was over the years, the sheer number of mx legends that have came thru there. The local, lived there or were close talent, Reynard, Marley, Cliff Palmer, Trey Ownes, Whispern, Terry Osbounre, Dennis Ownes, Jack Brassfeild, Waylen Litchfield, Homer Wolfslayer, Greg Brown, Eubanks, Chan Baker, Clifford Adonpte (can never remember how to spell his name, but his dad Topper was one of the nicest guys I ever met) Cooper, Brett Schumate... then you had the guys you would see from time to time,
Windham, Chicken, Lamson, Boyer, Pastrana, Stephson, Charlie Boggart, Walker, man, too many to list!

During the summer, there would be the night time national that was a big race, but the Dr Pepper race was HUGE. We look up one tuesday evening in 92 or 93, here comes cooper, and the rest of team suzuki. 1998, Reynard and Cooper battling it out in the 125 pro race, last corner, Cooper, NAILS robbie, then they get back to the pitys, Cooper comes stomping over and literally proceeds to cuss robbie out for letting him let cooper even get that close! HE was like, "Dont you EVER let someone do that to you! You left the door wide open!" and Robert is around the side of the box van crying hes laughing so hard... there is NO whining when Coop is around! So next race, robbie, goes balistic fast, for about 3 laps out of 10. Then we are all like wft is he doing, he about ate poop just then, wth? He broke a foot peg off the right side.... gee, never heard a 98 suzuki doing that (rolls eyes) SO here comes coop, robbie is havign none of it! 59th actually had damn good whoops in the day, robbie is hitting them so fast hes sitting down and still skimming. Cooper, he should go into the motivational busniess!

man, 59th and tuesday nights... THAT was the best thought! if i could go back it would be to then!

I bet David or Robert would know about Marco. One of the fastest big men I have seen. He and Scott South.

Oh wow so you remember Marco?

And Born2Slow, I still see Home Woolslayer out at the airport pretty often, well before I moved to WashingtonDC a couple months ago. And believe it or not, he has the same amount of legend at the airport that he does at the motocross track.

Me and Marco had our "issues" for a few years in the late 80's. If finally led to a takeout clinic at Oak Hill. Off the track we were civil, even friendly. On the track was a completely different story. I miss the 500 class!

J.W.- no I haven't rode for shit in about 3 years. Weren't you at Field of Dreams the day I busted the wheel on my 450 Kawi in '06? That was pretty much the end of it. Burn out finally set in (already had about 7 years earlier- but I refused to answer the door). I still have 2 bikes in the garage and have been threatening to get back into it. If Reynard Raceway takes off- I just may.

Oh yeah, you misspelled "Homer"! :-)

Two things! First of all, it is not Homer Wolfslayer- :-) Its "Woolslayer".

Secondly- I don't know what happened at the Dr. Pepper race in '93- I was on the sidelines with a new baby girl. But 1992 is when Coop brought Steve Lamson out. I remember getting caught up behind a guy on an RM250 for a little over a lap in practice. I couldn't pass that bastard for nothing. Just when I started to gas out a little, I caught a glimpse of his chest protector. Lamson 16. Then I was blown psychologically. He blew my doors off the next lap. I got 4th in 250 Intermediate at that race. That tells you how fast you had to be to do well at 59th!

The stories from 59th could easily fill 10 pages on here......

12/29/2009 6:37pm
if you were 250 intermediate through the early and mid 90's then Dean Bodine was there, jeremy abney was moving up thru there, and then they started an over 25 class in 96 and it was STACKED! easily the toughest class.

no am or expert, a b or c.. if you are voer 25, here you go.

The cub races were awesome... honda cub, full plastic body work, lets have a half time race on them! Neil Reed lets little johnny marley ride his, until he hits the whoops and was skimming them ROFL.... the was the end of that!

or one night, when neil, chan, and laura all were partners, there was this drunk mini-boyfriend there. They had already been into it with him for his behavior towards this 6 or 7 year old kid.... total white trash dude, no shirt, greasy hair, go fast while i get drunk and throw dirt clods at you kind of guy. So race ends, kid doesnt do what drunk ass loser boyfriend thinks he should have, meets him at exit gate and is yelling, grabbing his helmet, abusive... before ANYONE can even remotely make a move, here goes Chan flying past us on a Cub, he hits the brakes for MAYBE 1 second and steps off at FULL run and clocks this guy so hard you could hear it! And everyone that saw it.... well, all we saw was a slip and fall by a drunk guy that hit his head on the ground lol

plus, legends? legends you want? well, there was Midpack, me, and gene brag! you havent lived until you saw the 3 of us noob it up and have 3 way WARS for the lead in the beginner class in 92! EPIC.... or maybe its just epic to me/us!

I don't remember Bodine. But me and Abney were fierce rivals in novice and also Intermediate. I moved up before him, but he benefited from the fact the I got married and never got to practice.

I remember around 2001 or so, Nick Metcalfe showed up in a big expensive looking rig, a bunch of bikes, and showing off during both practices. Really showing his ass.

I guess he thought he was going to clean up the Pro classes since he was a Suzuki support rider.

I think his best moto was a 6th. Humbling experience I'd say.

it was tough for visitiing pros or anyone really, to show up and do well in their class at 59th. it wasnt that it was a specialist track because of the layout or the dirt, it was because we raced it, not practiced, raced it, 2 times a week at least from april to october. you had it totally dialed because it would line out the same way every time.

here was how you knew if it was time to move up at 59th. you would start winning your class, goto texas, run the same class, and if you got a top 5, ok, move up. Otherwise, you would be a winning intermediate at 59th, and that was the only place you were a winning intermediate! lol

it had at one point an over and under bridge... matthes you listening? Great whoops EVERY week, the tunnel jump late in its life that you see robbie doing on those terrafirma videos, GOOD dirt for what is normally clay in the area. Great jump faces, good pits... was just a great place!

I remember Marco. My nickname is FullSize and he made me seem skinny. We had a few battles back in 1990. One down at Whitney at the Good TIme National we had a really good one - better for him because he beat me. He went pretty good on his 250 but he really hauled ass on a 500. I remember the DDog / Baker battles real well.

He always had really tricked out bikes and a nice box van. I heard he quite MX to race Jet Ski's. I'll bet Robbie or Robert might know where he is / what he's up to.

Ok GREAT so the question now is, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO MARCO? Seriously, if I can give my Dad that answer I think he will jump for joy. Funny thing is, my Dad never once talked to Marco Baker, but Marco was my Dad's FAVORITE rider to watch at 59th, especially on the day track in the back.

And I remember Jeremy Abney... what was his brother's name?

Oh man, when pro riders would show up there and get their asses handed to them on a platter, that was the best.

Andy Bowyer I'm sure has some great MCR stories.

It was known to the world as Motocross Raceways. To us it will ALWAYS be 59th.

Some of my best memories in life come from that little intersection on the outskirts of The City.

Trey Jorski was by far the fastest guy to grace 59th and Douglas back in the day. He was also the very 1st motocrosser from Oklahoma to sign a factory money ride.

Johnny Abney. We now go to the races with our kids. That Shawnee crew was pretty big. McQuerry, Boudoin, Ty Love, The Abney bros.

59th was the best! When I was a kid, I remember Jeff and Bryan Emig showing up on a regular basis. The 60/80 class was always stacked, and the pro classes were ridiculous. I witnessed some great battles between Clay Hoenshell, Trey Jorski, Guy Cooper, Dennis Daft, and Chan Baker. Too bad it's gone ... I have a lot of fond memories of that place.

Hey is this Eddy Adair? If so this is JW Patton
12/30/2009 6:44am
Bubba Ellis, Ryan St Cyr, me (J.W. Patton), Casey Clint and Andy Bowyer (NONE of my hick NASCAR-lovin frineds believes me that I used to beat Clint Bowyer on a motorcycle), Cliff Palmer, Clay Hoenshell, Denis Hawthorne, Otis Fudpucker (Coop's pseudonym), Colt and Levi Humphrey, MR. REDWINE (Oh Mr. Redwine was the EPITOME of the love one has for the pureness of motorcycle racing!)... I remember how the announcer always called him Mr. Redwine even though we all new what his first name was all of us kids called him Mr. Redwine, Jacob Martin (Who's dad posts on here as JMAR) and man I'm sure more will come back to me in a while.

Remember when Homer jumped into the scoring tower from the tunnel jump? Lat time I saw him at the airport I asked him about that... said it was terrifying... also asked him about being banned from AMA SX for life. A good story for a later date.

Post a reply to: Marco Baker, anyone from OK remember?
