MXGP Numbering System

How does it work? Can you just pick any number? Do you need to earn double digits, single digits and permanent numbers?

Number 1 is reserved for the world champions, if they choose to run it. Last one was Tixier in 2015.

It's a gentelmen's agreement between riders, not to take each other numbers. When you make your number a brand, no one is considering to steal it from you.

If I was a team owner or manufacturer paying all the bills and my rider won the championship I would make them run the #1 plate. Having the right to run the #1 plate is expensive and very hard to achieve. There's no way I wouldn't proudly show it off to the world.

Would you consider #1 to have more reconition for KTM than #222 or #84. I think Tixier was the last to run a #1 and who associates that with anything?

To the diehard fan no. They would know who the previous years champion was. Everyone who follows the sport closely knows that the #243 is the reigning champ. However to the casual fan or one new to the sport or even someone walking into a dealership the #243, 222 or 84 mean nothing. A big #1 on the bike clearly states that this bike, rider or team is the best. Easy to understand, simple to explain.

I think it was in the year 2010 when almost every team had similar numbers for their riders. The RedBull Factory KTM team had mx2 #111 Herlings, #11 Simpson, #1 Musquin and mxgp #222 Cairoli, #22 Concalves, #2 Nagl. Cool stuff

Numbers must be positive, no decimal points. It got too complex after that so they stopped there Tongue

I don't think there are a lot of ''casual fans'' watching MX actually.... since you have to pay to watch it. 99% of the people watching will be MX fans who know their stuff so there's no problem. And if they're only a tiny bit interested in the sport, they will figure that stuff out.

Exactly, I hate our stupid number system over here, just let these guys run what they want and can build an image off.

I know for me locally a lot of guys recognize me based off of number, they might have seen a YouTube video I made or followed on Instagam and if I had a different number every damn year nobody would have any clue who I was. I'm just a nobody local dude so think how it is for pros, I follow every race and I still have no clue who has what number for the majority of the 250 class. I definately understand earring the right to use a single or two digit number, but of a guy like 722 wants to keep the three digit or if Bubba wanted to run 259 why not?

I'm a fan of the run what you earn each year. Different people will have different views.
