MXGP France - Foam stuck to helmets

Just been watching the muddy MXGP from France. A lot of riders had big pieces of foam or sponge stuck all over their helmets. What's the purpose of that?

Its so they can help soak up the water. When it rains, the sponges on their helmets help keep the rain from getting on the track and making it muddier.
