You remember the old MTV reality series where they follow and film ordinary people who have a goal and want to be "made" into things like singers, athletes, dancers, skateboarders, etc. The person is joined by a "Made Coach", an expert in their chosen field, who tries to help them attain their goals over the course of several weeks or months. MTV 'Made' documented the process the people undergo as they try to achieve their goal.

Let's say there was a fit 30 year old 180lb person that has followed motocross his whole life and he went on the show to be 'Made' into a MX pro with the goal of getting that last qualifying position for an AMA MX National. Would it be easier to try to get the person to qualify for an AMA 250 or 450 MX national?

Probably 450. Did you ever see the episode of the girl that wanted to race and she rode a ttr125. She wadded a bunch but ended up racing in the end.

450 would be easier, but I just can't imagine it being even close to possible. Lots of people are fit in the sense that they could run 5 or 10 miles with a pretty manageable amount of training, but the number of people with the God given coordination to ride MX even at the amateur national A class level is extremely small. Also, most people who exercise regularly rarely, if ever push themselves very hard, meaning the odds of the person having real endurance is pretty low. That's a whole other animal to tackle outside of the actual riding. If the hypothetical person was a hard core mountain biker and extremely coordinated, they might have a chance at being mid pack in the B class at a decent amateur race after 6 months, and honestly that's a stretch. Motocross is fucking hard dude.

Although I am willing to contribute through crowdfunding and otherwise support a movement to get some household name stick and ball player to carry out this very experiment on a popular national network. There are no words for how magnificent that would be.

Personally I don't think it would be possible for a 30 year old to turn pro and qualify for a National.
He / she would have to have a LOT of natural talent and a LOT of time dedicated to just that goal.

Yea I dont think its plausible. Almost all the people on the line of a pro mx race have been racing since they were very young. Starting at 30, you are already on the upper end of age for mx. And Id say you would need about 5 years of solid training before you could consider racing even A class. So that puts you at 35. I just dont see it happening.

I think that's the guy what played Elaine's boyfriend on Seinfeld. "Hey babe...you think if I jumped off that balcony I'd get hurt?"

Haha I was just watching that show a few weeks ago. Always made me laugh at the people they chose. I remember the beauty queens they chose in one episode that was afraid of getting in mud. If you haven't seen any of them I highly recommend them for a good laugh. They are still available for stream on mtv for free.

Following it on tv the web and in mags are one variable, participating in either pro class Is the other...

Rather than come here and ask the question. Head out to your local race and particularly pay attention to the speeds of the beginner or novice class compared to the A or pro class.

Prob true.

But, the burnout factor should be much less.
Myself, I think a lot of the pee wee wonders that become champs at 20 don't stretch it till 30 because, well,
They're just tired of doing it.

I think I read somewhere DeCoster saying he still had it, physically, till about 35, to be a contender in the GPs.

Lots of great comments, but 250 or 450?
Ughh I think you should have gathered that it isn't going to matter what class you're in, you aren't going to take up MX at 30 and expect to make it pro.

It seems like a REALLY tall order to try to make someone into a PRO Motocross racer & get them to at least qualify for a Pro National, especially in the time frame that MTV's MADE allotted. Being 30yrs old & never raced/ridden is going to make that even tougher. I would think if they did a show on that, they would be shooting for a local MX race & the goal would be more lets finish the race & try to get in the top 3. I would think a 250 would be the better bike for a beginner wanting to race (unless they are riding a 450 already).

Theres to many things we don't know. Has this 30yr old ever ridden a dirtbike? If so, whats their skill level?

If the goal has to be qualifying for a AMA National, well mannnnn a 450 I guess!!!

So it looks like the answer is a 450. Thank's everyone. I was originally thinking 250, but I took the lap times of the last few guys at Unadilla and the times are pretty close. On a 450 it'd probably be a little easier with less shifting and more power to get around. So, yea, I agree with everyone here and think a better option would be a 450.

Essentially, I was just curious if it was easier to get that last transfer spot in a 250 or 450 MX national.

Can't tell if this is a serious post or just a fake account. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but it's unlikely. The craziest thing that I have ever witnessed is a young man that I somewhat know who went from the novice class to making the gate for some nationals and main events in supercross (currently 450 East, 250 west) in around 3-4 years. Obviously this guy (now in his early 20s) has an absurd amount of talent, but it didn't happen in a few weeks or months.

No way in either class. Lots of people are in great competitive shape, but the amount of actual moto practice and track experience, race craft, make it impossible for someone with no riding experience to get enough SKILL to be that fast. That late in life. Being in good enough shape is not a problem for somebody with athletic ability. Just my opinion. Who was that older x football player that was trying to qualify for SX a couple years ago? Mr. Something? Dangerous, let's see someone new to riding jump Larocos leap, with ruts up the face. It's pretty simple just turn that throttle, that's alll there is to it. Right?

All I gotta say is good luck OP. There is legitimately 0.01% chance of this happening

This thread is straight up offensive to anyone and everyone who spent all of their childhood and youth training, practicing, and racing with this very goal in mind without ever being close to achieving what is implied in this thread.

If the goal was to have someone enter some local novice race and reach a top 10 finish or something it'd seem like a reasonable goal.

I guess I am a buzz-kill, but asking which class would be easier as a national pro is like asking which is less likely to kill you, jumping out of a plane without a 'chute or eating a bucket of ignited thermite.

Edit: I guess I should be clear in saying that this is assuming that this was supposed to be done within some sort of limited time-frame, OP seemed to imply that. If not, well I guess the sky is the limit (sort of). But anyone doing something like that would most likely do themselves a big service in setting the goals a "bit" more humble. Most people who race (or have raced at some point) will likely tell you that they at some point had dreams of "making it". Some do, but most don't.
