The real reason they have sound testing is for OSHA about the workers at the stadium. Previously PA sound levels have been dismissed as no big deal as they are usually transient and have sound spikes but are not sustained. 2019 MEC opening ceremonies were sustained for about 40 minutes.

A buddy was there seated in industry seating. He said he had to leave a few minutes into opening ceremonies and go crash a section at the opposite end of the stadium. He asked if I would post this poll.
Poll

Why have sound testing at MEC if you go deaf during opening ceremonies?

I was there. It was stupid loud with the non stop club music. I could be wrong but isn’t that the wrong group to be playing that kind of music to.

I was there. It was stupid loud, and annoying as hell. Wish I would have had earplugs. Not at all for the bikes, since you couldn't even hear them when they were blaring crap from the speakers.

One of the best parts of attending an MX or SX race live is the sound of a full gate of bikes charging for the holeshot. Yet they blasted music on the starts and completely drowned it out, at least for the starts outside the stadium.

I swear the guy in charge of the sound for MEC heard RB Straight Rhythm's "Enhanced" audio, and said "Hold mah beer and listen to this!"

For comparison, I was at Washougal this year sitting 2/3 of the way up horsepower hill (right on the fence less than 5 feet from the edge of the track) and the sound of the 40 bikes that close at full throttle wasn't as loud as the sound system at MEC at midfield in the stands.

The sound system blaring ruined the last SX I went to in Phoenix. Between that and the non stop commercials, I won't be going to another one.

Ummmmm... People expect things louder than the bikes at mec (or even a normal sx)... Like fireworks, loud music, etc.... If you go there expecting low noise levels, lol, that's on you...

Imo most normal people would expect less noise levels at a national... Most would expect the loudest thing for the day would be the bikes off the start..

I’d love to answer but the options aren’t very well thought out.

Didn’t find it too loud at all from 4th row or whatever I was. Didn’t attend last year.

I thought it was more reasonable than previous years, even with earplugs in.

However, there was one announcer who clearly had no idea what was going on.

“In first place was Adam Cruncholo, with nine points. In second place was Ellie Twomack, with one point. He was followed by Malcolm Stewart with 27 points.”

Now that was cringeworthy.

Seriously!!! That was the absolute worst part of the entire night. That guy was an idiot and was clearly pulled from behind a desk and thrown in. I couldn’t stand it!!

Euro events have been as bad, they used to blare music so loud between races that you couldnt even talk to the huy sitting next to you.. when the bikes are sound checked to within an inch of thier lives WTF is the point of ear splitting music and chainsaws with no exhausts.

I went to the Vegas SX in 2016 and the volume level on the speakers was unbearably loud.

I've been to a few Anaheim SX events since then, and the speaker volume was not an issue.

I went to Ironman and sat in the holeshot club seating, announcer there was too loud IMO. So was the music.

I was there, opening ceremonies were wayyy louder than 2019 Vegas supercross, as well as way worse choice in music. Nobody wants to hear royalty free off-brand club music at a supercross race...

I agree, the last two years at ironman has been way too loud. Luckily brought earplugs both times.

Cringe worthy? Yes. Comedy gold? Absolutely.

I think a lot of 2 stroke fans were disappointed that Alessi didn't actually score 800 points on that 2 stroke.

The highlight of cringe was asking Japanese FMX rider Genki Wantanabe about also competing in the BMX freestyle competition. "I'm sorry, my English isn't very good, I don't understand the question."

Nah bud, your English is just fine, nobody knows WTF this announcer is talking about.
