Lucas Coenen... (!!!)

Edited Date/Time 8/21/2022 5:23am
Let me present you a name that most of you might want to remember for the next few years : Lucas Coenen.

In 2021 and for his first year on the 125 he ended up 3rd in the EMX125 standings, by finishing of the season really strong : he won 5 of the last 6 races.

He made his first step in the EMX250 class this year, and came to second in the points by CRUSHING the competition at the end of the season. Since Lommel, he won 7 out of 8 motos (the only one he didn't won was a dnf) with a very large margin, even on hardpack :

Lommel race 1

Won with half a second on Bonacorsi, but got 35 seconds ahead of Elzinga. He turned a 2.11.298 whil everyone outside Bonacorsi/Elzinga/Farres was a 2.13.

Lommel race 2

Won with 37 seconds over Guillem Farres and 41 seconds on Elzinga. His fastest lap was a 2.08 while everyone else was at best a 2.12.

Swewen race 1

Had a dnf

Sweden race 2

Won with 9 seconds over Osterhagen and 20 over Prugnieres. His fastest lap was a 1.52 and outside of Osterhagen nobody got under 1.54.

Finland race 1

Won with 5 seconds overs Mc Lelland and 13 over Osterhagen. Turning a 1.52 was at least a second a lap faster than anyonr else.

Finland race 2

Won with 21 seconds over Bonacorsi and 42 over Toendel. He turned a 1.52 while the other riders where turning 1.56/1.57 (Bonacorsi had a 1.55)

France race 1

Won by 28 seconds over Martinez and 31 over Prugnieres. His fastest lap was a 1.51 while the other riders where turning 1.53/1.54 (Grau had a 1.52).

France race 2

Won by 24 seconds over Grau and 38 over Mc Lellan. His fastest lap was a 1.52, while everyone was around 1.56-57 (Grau and Mc Lellan had a 1.55).

This yound Belgian is ready for the world championship class. He also got a twin brother Sacha who had a couple top ten in EMX250 this year and almost won a race before crashing.

Damn impressive. That class is no joke, he's making it look like one recently. 3 seconds a lap faster on a track like this is huge

No matter the country, motocrossers always seem to have last names no one has ever heard of.

Those 2 brothers are big big talents. He said in a recent interview they hope to be full time in America in 2024.
If KTM/Husq group dont sign them to America they will really regret it. Just like they passed on the laurence brothers. & now farres showin good speed. KTM should be hand picking top talent & shipping them over to US

I believe you'll be seeing both the Coenen brothers riding for Diga next year with factory support from KTM.

that was the first thing I tought about when I saw van Horebeek on the ground. Hopefully he's good to race though.
But probably van Doninck would be next in line

I watch all the emx 125 races I can find. 15 min into a race 14 riders fighting for a position . To win the last few races and do the same in the 250 class. The kid is special and his dob is November. The fastest riders all hv Nov dob or close to it. I bet he’s faster then Deegan in the sand rt now.

5 moto wins in a row in EMX is unheard of.

They both grew in the summer, and t has helped.

Got an earful from a team owner about these boys on Saturday evening , and there could be circa 2003 Tony Alessi type of parental control thing going on.

From what I was told, dad wants total control over their training and bike setup, and that is not sitting well
With some guys who write the checks.

But Lucas is damn fast, that kid has some big talent.

From his post race interview it looks like he's trying to race Turkey, and he made it clear he's going there to put down some results. I think RVDM did it a few years back after his EMX title and immediatley landed on the podium.

Lucas was allways the slower brother, it's been since the 2nd half of the season last year that he got better and more consistent than Sacha. I'm wondering what Sacha will do once he'll get a little bigger.

Is that the reason they've split with Bud?
In the end of the day , when you see their progress every year, they're obviously doing things right...
I remember when they were on 85s they were working with Topsport vlaanderen , i'm not sure but i think Joel Smets was one of the trainers back then. Also Liam Everts and Geerts were in the same program.

Elzinga had nothing for him in the 2nd half of the season. If Lucas had started the season better, I think he would’ve been champ.

True, but Elzinga is also struggling with health issues. So it’s not really a fair to compare.

Elzinga is very good and deserved the title. But Lucas Coenen is the next big thing. Like slamdunk future MX2 world champ or/and US 250 MX champ (asterisk being that he stays healthy and doesn't have any major setbacks).

He didnt need to have, just cover off Toendel.

He spent the last races just trying not to lose it.

What about Toendel tho? Came very close at one point and then just kept throwing it away..

The guy is legit, EMX 250 and 125 are some of the best races to watch either side of the pond imo serving up some fantastic racing

Lucas really impressed me at Portugal. You could tell he throws everything he has into it. If he keeps progressing like he has this year, he can be a real threat. But it’s hard to judge against the emx class right now IMO. The only two I see going for any world (or ama) championships in the future are Lucas and Andrea bonacorsi. I think one year in mx2 for Andrea and then bump him straight to mxgp and in a couple years he will be a threat. I just think he’s too big for the 250. I don’t see coenen being a great sx rider if he comes over to the states tho.

I watch EMX250 very closely and These guys caught my eye early in the season, especially Lucas, but Sacha is no slouch either. Gotta think had Lucas caught fire a little earlier in the season he would have gotten Adamo or Everts’ spot on RedBull KTM, but sounds like he will be just fine. Excited to see how their careers play out the next few years

Because of his good start of the season Toendel was seen as the big competitor of Elzinga.
But if you look at the points scored in the last 7 events Toendel only scored 1 win and a 3rd, and was 5th in points scored.

01 Coenen, L 265
02 Elzinga 258
03 McLellan 219
04 Prugnieres 208
05 Toendel 193
06 Bonacorsi 187
07 Osterhagen 154

Having Tøndel on the ground at least once almost every moto sure helps a lot.
