After getting a solid day in the garage I decided to start digging into the bike. Pulled the seat off, and we were off to a great start. Air filter cage was missing completely and the 8mm bolt was 1 thread away from falling into the motor. Unsure

I ordered a coil since the stator has been replaced recently and started small, also got a brand new NGK spark plug to be safe. After swapping both I still couldn't get a spark. I decided to break out the multimeter, a beer and the manual then got down to business. I checked everything over that I could. Everything was in check. Yet no spark. I was confused and minutes away from ordering a whole harness and ECU. However, it hit me, check the connections to the ECU. So I took it off the frame and bingo! The blue/white wire basically fell out of the ECU that is connected to the coil. I remember reading on here that it is a notorious problem with these RMZ's of this year range due to the mounting position. I put it back in, and we had spark.

I put some fresh VPR and an oil change in it the kicked it about 10 times and she runs like a top. I let it run for a minute then killed it. Started it back up 10 minutes, 1st kick. We have life!

I'm very relieved. I'm a little scared with the lack of the air filter cage, I hope there wasn't too much damage done Sad

Duuuuuuuddee!! Way to f'in go!! I'm in a lot of different moto relates groups on Facebook, and everytime some kid asks "why won't my bike start?" I say "Do yourself a favor - get a service manual and a multi-meter - you'll fix your bike and learn A LOT in the process!" You sir, are proof of this.

Likely some scoring on the intake side of the piston/cylinder wall... Perhaps do a compression test just to see where you're at... but unless you really wanna throw more money at it, just ride the damn thing until you're ready to tear into the top end

Only other comment I'll make, is now grease/lube everything! Steering head, etc

Thank you for the comment! It does take a little extra effort and patience! I'm no expert but the manual is there for a reason. Anything electrical I hate but it had to be done.

Those AMA stickers have been used in Arenacross for many years. Any local A rider could have ridden that bike a one round. It means little.
You can’t ride a 450 in ama arenacross therefore that wouldn’t be possible

I'm so pumped for you dude.

(Almost) everyone else - wow, what a bunch of negitive people! You really think 800 is a bad deal? You're high. Even if that motor was grenaded, as long as those wheels are straight he could easily part that thing out and make money. It's a gamble, but one i would SURELY take.

Most of you must forget (or, have never known) what it's like to not be able to throw money away... Either that, or most of you don't even really ride, and you just bench race and critique everyone. I have my suspicions.

I have some older RMZ parts from my 2010 that might fit if you need any. A set of aftermarket rads (actually 3 rads, 2 rights, 1 left), a straight front wheel, maybe some more. I'll let it go super cheap - it's just sitting in the basement in a box with other parts for bikes I no longer have. Smile

OP, glad it worked out for you!

I guess that $800 investment wasn't all that bad, was it? Wink

I don't think so. Been a while since I've been in that box. I'll look this evening.

Today I went to work on the bike again. I removed the coil wire from the ECM. I put a dab of super glue on it and stuck it back into the ECM. Kicked it over, started right up. Going to let it cure for a day then proceed the strip down! Stay tuned.

You better start a build thread!

I'm glad it worked out for you. Seems like a pretty good deal to get a running 450 for $800. Wink

This is a good read. I started working on bikes like this back when I was 12 or so. Couldn’t afford much so would get a junker and get it running and ride it. Thanks for sharing. I think you got a deal and it was fun finding the problem with you!
