I bought one (a 79) in 1980 when I was 16 with the money I'd made shoveling shit in a dog kennel, and washing dishes at a truck stop. I recall that I paid $400 for it? It was my first real moto bike, following a mid-70s MX175 that I bought with money I earned running a trap line for muskrat and coon. Central PA boy - all I wanted to do was move to CA and ride motocross. Those were the days. In 79 I'd bought my first street bike - an RD250 - that tried to kill me several times in the first months.

I owned one of these brand new. Great fun to ride. I would buy it, restore it and put it on the wall for art!

The last of the twin shock motocross bikes. I think Suzuki came out with the full floater after this model

Change the title to " I spoke with my wallet"

That oem rear guard is worth more than $1,750.
Buy that 79, its a great bike.

79 had the spring chain tensioner and full clamp for the front brake cable.

Ya do it. A buddy of mine had one. Pretty peaky powerband compared to the kdx175 I was riding at the time. Fun bike though. Would be a hoot at post vintage Mx.

Close. 1980 was the final year for twin shocks at Suzuki, though there were few changes between the 79 and 80 models.

Yup - the 81 was full floater and water cooled. Still drum brakes tho. I remember drooling over the photos in the mags. I left for the military in June 81, 3 days after I graduated high school. I was still 17. I had my Dad crate and ship my 79 RM125 to me in Biloxi, where I broke my femur on in in late 81. Didn't ride moto again until I was 38.

Great memories of that bike! I was just talking to a friend about acquiring that model.
It was my 1st real motocross bike. Paid $600.00 used in 1980. I rode it at Rabbit Run racetrack in North Dallas. I say get it !

Can't think of a single reason you shouldn't own that scoot. You'd spend more than that on a half assed vacation.

81 was first year of "Full Floater" I think the RM125 was also water cooled that year for the first time. If memory is correct the RM250 also got the full floater but was air cooled in 81 and was water cooled for first time in 82. Post edit: just did some google picture searches 1985 was first year of front disc brake on RM. 87 first year rear disc

There was nothing there when I was a kid in the late 70s. Or at least nothing I was aware of - my Dad was not into moto at all, and I knew no one that rode other than me. I raced a Dist 6 race at some track down in York in 80. Jeans and work boots. Only time I ever raced. I built a "track" in one of our fields with a shovel and wheelbarrow. I was the only one that rode it.

Almost correct. My 1988 RM125 was the first year with a rear disc. As a Suzuki fan, I was really disappointed that the '87 was the only bike without one.

I wonder if Suzuki introduced the rear disc on the 125 and 250 on different year models? 81 RM125 water cooled, 81 RM250 air cooled. I think 87 RM250 had a disc - from your post I guess RM125 wasn't until 88. Fun trivia!
