Have any of you guys beaten, or witnessed someone beat a nationally recognized amateur or pro at a local race?

This is inspired by the nine year old ten page Alessi supermini post that I wasted 45 minutes going through. People brought up Mike McDade beating Alessi at a local race once.

Zach Osbourne got beat by a local kid named Matt Williams in an 80 class at a sand track called Montrose MX in the earl 2000s. Matt could ride that track with his eyes closed, and he was a little bit older/bigger/stronger than Zach.

I saw Cooper Webb race a Ponca qualifier at Wide Open MX in Raeford NC in 2010. He was racing a tricked out CRF150R in the school boy class and a local kid named Jamal Porter was on him pretty hard the first class moto, then the first moto of the second class he beat Cooper.

Not rare for JoJo Keller to pull of such feats at south wick national or Florida winter ama.

I beat Billy Laninovich once. True story.

(OK, OK, he was just off an 85, we were still racing 125 Intermediate, it was a no-consequence race at our local track, and he was messing around in the 2nd moto, trying to roost his friends on the side of the track, but it counts!) Steven Eugenio was in that race too, and I eked out a position ahead of him and managed to win the overall. Both fast guys who went on to become pros.

A friend of mine named Frankie Brundage won the World Mini in the 250 Pro class in about 1987. I'll have to see who he beat, but it was likely a who's-who of late '80s/early '90s professionals.

EDIT: NW#599 might know... do you have a results list for the '87 World Mini?

I love Southwick, sand is definitely my favorite surface but also because of the story surrounding one or two of the locals every year.

Donald Upton use to beat just about everyone at Perris back in the 90's.

The year Shea Bentley won the 125 SX title. He showed up to Echeconnee in GA. Stewart was still on an 85, could've been a kx100 can't remember. They battled back and forth both motos but James came out on top each time. Local guy Derek Fisher was also hauling ass that day and I think he finished 3rd. Fun day, I think I was riding schoolboy and he lined up for that as well. We had a hard core battle for the first 13 feet out of the gate before I decided to just let him go...

I think a few guys have handed Nico Izzi his ass here in Wisconsin over the last couple of years.

Stayed ahead of kdub for about 6 laps, and yes he was trying. Beat Huffman also on a different day, we went hard for about ten laps, rode by my van and gave me a thumbs up after

Watched local Texas fast kid Brandon Beabout give Heath Voss all he could handle at cycle ranch one time back in the day. Was really fun to watch. Brandon could fly at that track. Voss eventually got him. It was impressive though, because at the time Voss was doing very well in the pros. Voss wife was up in the scoring tower, think she was getting annoyed with some of the comments being made lol

I remember hearing in a interview with Travis Pastrana while he was a national champion. The most stressful thing for him was racing local races. There would always be someone that was national caliber at there local track.

Did i do that?

Marty Moates first 500cc GP victory for an American on US soil. Up to 1980 the euros were stick dominant. That ended with Moates taking both moto wins at Carlsbad. Local track for Marty, Johnson, Glover and many other top pro's.

I bested Steve lamson and a handful of other national pros at a local money race way back in 05 or 06 can't remember exactly. First Moto I holeshot on my trusty 4 speed RMZ450 and just put the hammer down. Took a glance over at the finish line 180 corner the first lap and nobody was there! I was like what the heck where is everyone. Just put it in cruse and motod to the win. Pretty much the same deal in Moto 2. I felt really good on the bike that day.
Even though Steve was retired by then it was way cool lining up with one of my heroes on my home soil.

I beat Pedro Gonzales back in '88 at a local race in San Antonio, Texas before he got his Pro Circuit ride. May not have been a top-tier name, but I was happy with it..

Back when alessi was in his prime, Brandon Kalimakea (most likely spelled wrong) use to give him FITS at Cedar city Utah. Alessi could holeshot and Brandon never gave him an inch. I don’t recall Brandon ever actually beating him, but for anyone to keep up with Alessi on an 80 at a local race was all but folklore.

Also AJ Sjostrom use to do things at Starwest that no one else could do....his pops ran the place so it was really the only place he rode. With that being said though, he would smoke just about any pro that came to practice out there through the week.

Frankie says,
"Kiedrowski, Matasievich, Dubach, Manley."

w00t

That reminds me of another thing: he used to run his first name on the jersey, "Frankie"
Then his pants had a butt patch that read, "Says Relax."
Who gets that one?
