We all know those bikes had turds for motors but Michael ripped some hole shots against the 150’s! Anyone know any details on his bike??

Sa a picture of terry varner holding the second place trophy. Was standing by a cr125. If it was this bike then he did the engine.

I had the privilege of working under Varner in the FMF engine shop back in 99 when FMF ran the 125 Honda team. Varner knows how to squeeze the HP out of those motors.

Many years now i'm wondering what the difference will be with a stock engine and a Varner engine on the last gen cr250. Not that a 250 is to slow but just to feel the difference what a man like Varner can do with a cylinder/ engine job.

Maybe next winter it's time to do it.

Michael’s dad here. Terry built the engine. It is 134cc’s and it made 37.58 hp last Monday at Terry’s shop In Hesperia last Monday. Ran a 36mm carb with a FMF pipe and DEP silencer. MRX02 mixed 50/50 with Maxima K2 at 32 to 1. We bought and dynoed the parts and ran what worked best. Guessing the KTM’s are 44-45 hp. Terry’s engine had a good front side and that helped compete with the faster KTM 150. Michael rode the wheels of it and I’m very proud of his result. Looking forward to next year and showing up with something more on par

He was faster over most all the jumps. He lost time mostly on the tables where the 150's had flat ground to accelerate past. I was rooting for him all night.

There was a 125 hpp build here that was pumping the same amount of hp out of that engine with a 125cc instead of 134.

So with less words those old cr engines still having it compared to the oranges and whites.

All the oranges huggers having a bad week.

He had the cleanest most perfect landing whip on 1 of those 3 big doubles right off the start. It was the smoothest landing I think I have seen in a while. Good job Michael!

Terry posted this on Facebook less than 2 weeks ago - I wondered who he was building it for... Michael ripped that bike, no doubt!

If you're saying the CR is on par with the orange/white bikes then I think everyone who's ridden them and any competent builder would disagree with you.

37.58 hp on the dyno isn't anything to sneeze at on a tiddler, especially if it makes good power through the midrange. Tests of the KTM/Husky 125's and 150's(144cc) have test riders leaning towards the 125 more than the 150. I've read that more than once...

Yeah, fair play to Varner and Leib!

Josh485 on here and me traded rides on our cr125 and sx150 and the difference is insane.

I have a friend speaking with Reynard about some CR125 engine building. He built some of Lamson's stuff and claims he can get 40 plus from the CR125. He was specific in that it would be an x number of hours engine though. Leib's bike was ripping and being run hard all day.

I’m pretty sure Tallon Vohland’s bike back around 99-01 used a 95 cylinder and airbox mods, giving it a significant boost over stock. I believe one of the big problems with the aluminum framed Honda 125s was the lack of airflow to the motor. Also there’s a lot of people who prefer the 134 over the 144.

That is correct from memory, the airboot was a bit restrictive?

No that’s a small problem.

It’s the very angled intake, transfer shape and angles. The kart guys get 2hp from a dead straight intake and reeds. The transfers need devcon. Nice pipe helps.
Water cooled exhaust spigot so it makes horsepower for more than 2 laps. old 2 strokes lose power a couple laps onwards.

Can confirm, not even comparable.

Keep in mind my CR only has mild porting done by my far from expert hands, but even against a stock 150 isn’t not even close to fair. My yz250 would honestly be a much better match up, anyone who thinks the Honda is even remotely close is dreaming.

It's crazy that the 150sx at 1/8 throttle is making the same feeling power as the cr125 wide open.

Of course, 485 is younger and better looking and gets around the track much faster on that cr125 😂😂😂

Yeah nah. The Hpp when done well can feel pretty strong. Even the later models
