Legends Race: Suggestions for Future

Edited Date/Time 8/24/2015 1:00pm
DC... great job with the Legends race. I think we can work with this idea and refine it even more. Here is my idea. DC, feel free to poach it.
1. Various teams agree to prep a race ready 2 smoker for a Legend they recruit in advance. Have the 125 smoker sitting under the team tent along with the Legend for that race. Provide the Legend promo pictures or posters to sign and have them participate with team signing.

2. Race 5 to 10 Legends in a "open practice" where they spin laps to put together the fastest time based on an average of their 2 fastest laps.

3. Have the fans participate in a 50/50 raffle for $1 or $5 per raffle ticket. Winning fan ticket gets 50% of the money and the other 50% to be distributed to group of Legends in the form of a race purse.

4. Run a handful of these Legends races at pre-decided rounds of the MX series and the team with the most Legend wins gets the Legends MX Team Championship win and MX Sports cuts a check to Asterick Medical in the Legends Team Champion's name.

BOOM... everyone wins!!

The 2 stroke idea is an excellent one IMO.

I just watched the Legends race and honestly it was cooler in concept than it was watching the racing. I would rather see a pack of hungry lions on 125s or these legends on 300cc two strokes.

Take a guy like Stanton. I don't think he rides much. Hes certainly not close to the top 5's pace. Whats his motivation to come out and lose by half a lap to Carmichael?

Seeing the older guys out there but having the race not turn into just parade lapping around is going to be the hardest thing to solve going forward. Nobody want to embarrass or be embarrassed but the skill levels of retired riders vary by a lot.

Having said that Stanton wasn't the fastest, he still had the most style. Nobody rides a bike like him, sitting way back on the seat and making the bike go where he wants rather than him going where the bike wants. One of the most distinctive styles in MX history. I was happy to see it again and hope to see lots more legends in years to come.

Make it 3 riders per team on any brand of bike, and combine their scores for a winning team. Also have them ride 2 strokes or stock 250 four strokes.

The point of the 125 smoker is twofold;

1. Fans of the Legends will no doubt love seeing their past MX heroes rail the shit out of a smoker.
2. Legends don't want to be shown up by anyone past or current and riding a 125 smoker allows for them to ring the hell out of it, but also should close the gaps in timing among them and also not allow for their times to be compared to current pros which would only point out their loss of speed.

I say my idea is solid!

Here is my Legends 125 smoker wish list:

Kehoe (wearing all yellow retro O'Neal gear + yellow open face with blue Scott goggles and face mask!!)
Micky Dymond
Mark Barnett
Jeff Ward (Retro Sinsalo white + Open face w/ goggle nose guard / mouth protector combo)
Johnny O'Mara (Retro Answer + Open face combo)
Broc Glover (Retro pink JT gear)

and the all time capper....

Bob Hannah!!

This

Let them ride what they want.

Make it an annual 3 race series where points are kept, and the winner gets his name on a golden expansion chamber...kind of how good does their trophys

The legends race was awesome, great to see many of my heros back on the same track as today's top riders. However, take it for what it is, a great chance to see a bunch of hero's on the track at the same time, not a real race. While a couple of the guys were going near full tilt, most have lingering injuries that held them back. Like I said in my post from last night, watching some of those guys walk around the pits will enlighten you to how much of their body's they gave to the fans and the sport. To me, after watching how badly they can even walk now days, I was amazed they were able to even ride at all.

There's only two things I'd change about the race:

1) More lead time so more legends can clear their schedules. The race was awesome, but it would have been more awesome with guys like MC and Bradshaw there.

2) Have Weege and Grant announce the broadcast. I didn't like hearing Lurch talk about something that was happening on the opposite side of the track without having the video cut to it.

Other than that, I loved it, and I hope it keeps getting bigger and better in the next few years.

5) have the legends start gates drop by age or era, oldest first, youngest last, maybe 3 gates

I don't think there needs to be a purse... I doubt RC, Windham, or many other legends will give a shit if $500 is on the line... I think the exact thing they did was just fine. Low key, low pressure, ride what THEY want.

I would rather see 2 strokes because all of legends did race them plus not run the complete track either it's just for show .

IT was fine the way it was, would just be good to see more legends out there next year.

These guys have had their time racing for championships and seriously, I good light hearted race that is more about getting to see the legends of the sport cut a few laps of a current national track on a current bike is awesome.

Seriously who would have really wanted to see RC on a 125 two stroke yesterday? I would much rather see him air out the same jumps the current pros were hitting like he was.

I suggested the 125's so that they wouldn't be tempted to jump all the big jumps or feel that they had too. And I think they would have alot more fun racing them...

I think that the more fans morph this one off race to something that it'll never be will drive this event to never happen again

If you want to even it up for the older riders, as well as getting points for the Moto's you add the age of the rider in points to the total, If you are 50 you get +50 points , if you are 35 you get +35 points.

One other thing to think about is it is still the chance of injury to the riders. Whats the worst that can happen in legends golf or tennis compared with MX ?

MC and some other racers, 2 strokes, and like Stanton suggested on DMXS the other night a couple of races series. I can see it's pros and cons of a series so I'd love to see it happen but would understand if it just couldn't work.

Jesus, let them go out and ride once or twice a year on whatever bike they want... It's nice to see them out there for
15 or 20 minutes... People wanting to time them and everything else...

You want to make rules now? how about a pee test?

To my knowledge Honda doesn't make a two stroke. Wtf will KDub ride?

Just enjoy the legends race for what it is

I am a pacifist so I wouldn't punch him in the throat but I would very happy if he dropped that worn out screaming BS.

Yeah who wants to "labor" a light weight 2 stroke around a rough track when they could be riding something 10 to 14 pounds heavier around the track in third gear.

More riders would be the only change I would make. Other than that I enjoyed it very much.

Strive for a full gate next year. Only one round would fine but with way more notice. Move venue every year, instead of extra laps maybe another short moto at t hh e end of the day.

All fans of the Legends love 2 strokes and the smell of premix will only enhance the nostalgia.

Only have true legends on the gate, who actually still have access to their own motorcycle and factory parts. We don't need guys out there trying to run up front then having their shit bike cutting out and taking out half the field in turn one.
Call me an idiot, but that's my .02

While I like the idea of the 2-strokes, I don't think many of the retired guys would be willing to ride a national track thats just been ridden on by the fastest guys in the world, on a 125 two stroke. Give the retired guys a break man....

But I do think the gate should be somewhat full. Fly in some more big names who still occasionally ride. Ron Lechein, Barry Carsten, Chuck Sun... Who cares if some of them have gotten older and a little slower, people would still like to see them swing a leg over a bike again.

Yeah, those POS factory bikes...

The jealousy on here regarding JT$ is entertaining.
