Helmet Impact Dynamics: “Following the crash involving Brad Anderson at the Hawkstone International Motocross event last Sunday, Leatt Corporation would like to make the following statement; Firstly and most importantly we would like to wish Brad a speedy recovery, he was released from Hospital late on Sunday night having received brain and other body scans, these where all clear ,with no brain injury or serious facial fractures apart from his nose. The purpose of a helmet, as with any safety equipment, is to reduce the risk of a serious injury. Our helmets are designed to deform and fracture under certain loads to reduce the accelerative forces being transferred to the head, brain and neck. The energy required to deform a helmet is hereby removed from the total energy that would otherwise have been directed to the rider’s head, brain and neck. All our motorcycle helmet models meet and exceed either or both of the industry accepted and widely adopted applicable safety standards namely; ECE 22-05 and DOT (FMVSS No. 218). As you can appreciate, the same accident rarely happens twice. There are always various accident dynamics at play including but not limited to the weight of the rider, the speed of the impact, involvement of the motorcycle, track conditions etc. It is therefore near impossible for Leatt to re-create the exact accident scenario, but hopefully you will appreciate from the videos below, the magnitude of force it would require to break the chin bar on the same helmet Brad was wearing. We are pleased Brad will make a full recovery and glad he was using a safety tested and certified Leatt product. In the videos below a weighted head-form and the ECE standard impact speed to the chin bar of 5.5 meters per second is demonstrated. Additionally, we performed the test at 6.5 meters per second, this exceeds the FIM road race standard chin bar impact of 6 meters per second.”

Doesn’t really explain why the chin piece snapped off?

Sure it does, at this point, they are implying that the force of the blow exceeded the structural limit of the helmet and of the amount of force that was used in their testing of the helmet . Anything will break if it is hit hard enough.

That’s cool seeing it flex like that. Wonder what force is behind the head in the helmet.

Yes I did, imagine it’s a first turn pile up, and this is what you have left for oncoming traffic.

If the chin piece is hit hard enough and doesn't break, something else will break - likely your neck.

Imagine your first turn scenario, except you have sustained serious head trauma already because the helmet did not absorb, disinigrate and
disperse those forces as it was designed to do.

Which other top line helmets you seen do this? Detachable chin bars aren’t allowed anymore or we’d still be using these

I’ve raced for 20 years, been down in many first corners and not once has this ever happened

Has anyone confirmed what he hit? If he slammed face first into a steel post, that's one thing. If he just face-planted in the mud and that happened, that's disturbing.

You wouldn’t have an imagination after that. Awesome video. Football helmets don’t break with impacts such as these and we know the consequences

I’ve been to a guys charity ride day, he died in a first turn pile up at a local race.

No two crashes are the same.

As an MIT professor says - Physics Works!
Every time.

The take away form leatt's post - he had to hit really, really hard. When you watch those videos - it's quite obvious no one here would want a 5.5m/s impact to rigid surface in ANY helmet. Especially chin bar first.

If the helmet isn't destroyed - your brain and face will be. Energy is conserved - if none is absorbed by the helmet you get it all to the body.

Good on Leatt for expressing their thoughts. I think they are a legit business trying to make quality products, based on R&D/testing/Historical Data...

Is there any video of the Brad Anderson crash?

Some people post some really stupid shit...wow. Fooling around is one thing but these posts that seem serious must be posted from the short bus.

wow that video of the testing is cool. I wish they would release more videos like that in regards to their even higher end helmet. The higher end helmet is very similar to the new formula everyone knows about. If leatt had more marketing on their side that helmet is way ahead of its time

I’ve raced for 20 years and never won a supercross main event. Webb’s win last week must be fake.

That's where I'm at!

There's some amazing tech in these new helmets and some of us seem to forget that there's been so much progress in design, materials and...MOST IMPORTANTLY...Testing.

On the hilarious side: the Genius Parade that runs their mouth on how worthless the Leatt is...because IT DOESN'T COST ENOUGH! ASS HATS...All!

Word to the cool kids with their 1990's brands that haven't changed their tech...legitimately; but, still charge you $700 for cool guy helmet that "so-n-so" wore back in the day. Those heavy POS's were cool way back when and they were even decent protection...

TWENTY YEARS AGO.

I -PERSONALLY- tested one...actually...TWO...of these new tech and materials based helmets the hard way...one high-speed fall in the Dez in 2017 and one low-speed fall during this year's 2019 450 Shootout...
Design Advancements and DOLLARS SPENT by Troy Lee saved me.
Period.

In the Hi-Speed case it was the Hi-Dollar Carbon SE4.
At the 2019 Shootout it was the Poly SE4.
Both crashes rang my bell pretty good. The Hi-Speed wrecked the liner...all the way thru all 3 layers at the "brow".
The low-speed was merely a few scratched on the shell.
TLD for life.

All the while, I'll be brutally honest about the 4-5 other brands that -also- make EXCLELLENT helmets for the money.

Leatt being one of them.

I've owned two Leatt helmets, and I bought them for the simple reason that is exemplified here. Leatt is pushing the limits of safety and shows transparency in its design and testing results. I discovered a few years back that Leatt is the only helmet company that posts their helmet testing data on their website. I was impressed by this. To be honest, the test reports are so detailed, I don't know what I am reading half the time. But the fact that they are willing to post it, is confidence building for me. Through further reading, I was surprised that the company was founded by a neurosurgeon...probably the only moto company that can say this. Apparently they are very nimble...this crash discussed here was on Sunday, and 4 days later they have already been re-creating it for re-search...cool to see some one is paying attention and cares to learn more. ...to take a phrase from Subaru..."They lived" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trMcnOoqWYs

I'm digging where this thread is going.

People buying better helmets.

Nice!
