At one point Ken Roczen had a 12+ second lead on Cooper Webb. How does that compare for the largest time gaps that a second-place rider has overcome to win a race?

I think of similar 1st place rider crashing or mechanical. Yes 2nd place rider did “overcome” a differential, but with some help.

Two that come to mind, Reed in the slop at Daytona and bike gave up the ghost. Tomac leading Colorado MX on his Honda and going down.

I looked up Tomac at Thunder Valley, and his largest lead (at the end of any laps) was 9.8 seconds:

But, yeah, maybe the provision should be that the guy who led the race would still need to finish in second place like Roczen did.

Roczen had a huge lead on Dungey at Hangtown 2016 then had bike problems in one of the motos.

I assume you are thinking about Glen Helen in 2016, when Roczen's air fork broke in the first moto.

Dungey led the first 8 laps. Then Roczen took the lead and within 4 laps had a 13.8 second lead! Then he limped home for a 4th-place finish.

This or id like to know the gap Herlings overcame in that second iron man moto years back when Marv crashed at the end.

Gotta be 2003 Budds Creek. Not sure about the gap but JS was about 15s behind the leader after turn 1 alone and then had to pass the whole field

Checked '08 Daytona. Emig says Reed had a 1 min 6 second gap on Windham when Reed's bike blew. I believe it. Took a while for Windham to go by Reed.

Well, I was trying to phrase things nicer.

But really what I am looking for is biggest leads blown.

So Stewart had a big comeback, but did the leader ever have a 12+ second lead?

JS was already almost 15 sec back after turn 1 because he took time to get going. Surely he lost more time to Tedesco or whoever was in the lead by having to go through the entire pack.
I'd guess he was as far as 20-25 sec back at one point.

Who wants to look up Stewarts come back from behind Toronto 2014? I can't seem to find a replay of it that has the time gaps across the top. Dry

When people talk about comebacks I'll never forget Salt Lake City 2017 when Tomac ran Dungey down. I dont remember how far back he was but I think it was roughly 12 seconds and then he ended up winning by about 8 seconds. Its fun watching those kinds of rides.

McGrath came from last to win on a 125 in 15 laps.
Can you count RC when he lapped 2nd place? I’m sure he was pretty far back. He was 20 seconds a lap faster than 2nd place which is unimaginable today.

If the leader falls or has bike issues would you call it overcoming the gap? For me one thing is taking advantage of the competition mistakes or issues to get ahead of them and another one is to flat out pull a Stewart or a Tomac close the the gap and win.

Weird that the timing isn't available but i just watched this race again since you mentioned it. Any one that wants a quick refresh on what were missing out on these days, watch Stewart from 10:48 here https://youtu.be/Yl08BO2GBoQ?t=647

Literally riding a different track than any other rider there doing multiple sections completely different.

Supercross the Toronto ride was crazy by JS.

Motocross hard to beat Tortelli's GH ride. I believe he was outside the top 20 both motos at the end of lap 1.

Musquin had at least a 10.2 second lead over Herlings.

SX only?

Tomac on Roczen Daytona '20; (different venue but damn, deja vu Kenny?)
Tomac on Dungey Salt Lake '17
Ozzy on Savatgy Vegas '17 (though not for the win, still epic)

How about some of the gaps El Chupacabra overcame back in his 250 motocross days?

When you take crashes into effect there have been all kinds of leads blown like the last race.

RV vs. Alessi at Glen Helen 2009. Was nearly 15 seconds down at one point; caught, passed and pulled away all in the second half of the moto.

See Zach Osborne for the championship in Vegas if you want to see a comeback.

Yep I’m with you; can’t call it overcoming a gap if the lead rider falls or has bike problems.

1988 (?) LA Coliseum....RJ goes down in the first turn, while Guy Cooper was running away with the race. Came from last to win...about 30-40 seconds? That one just sticks in my mind for some reason...
