Can’t get a reply from MX Sports. Does anyone know when alternates are selected for LL National? Do you have to pay and just show up, in case you are selected?

You do have to show up for sure and I would assume you have to pay but would guess the entry portion would be refunded if you did not get selected. You are also able to ride practice so you would want to be there clearly.

The rules are clearly posted on the MX Sports website. The registered alternates do not get final selected until after registration at the ranch has officially closed. Obviously they need to wait and see who actually shows up and signs up before filling the empty gates. So to answer your question you gotta pay like you made it, then show up like you made it and hope there's an empty slot left so you can make it.

Clearly you assume they are clear via the link you provided but you do not clearly represent what is clearly written on that page. What you type would be matter of fact it that’s what was clearly written. And yes it could be possible to select alternates prior to the event if a full gate wasn’t signed up for. So my question is if they wait on all selection until the day of. (Like standby for a flight)
Below is what is on their site:

WHO IS AN ALTERNATE?
An Alternate is a rider who did not finish in a guaranteed advancement position at either the Area Qualifier or Regional Championship. Alternates must pre-register for the National Championship with MX Sports to be eligible to fill vacancies in the final rosters. The Power Ranking System will determine the order in which alternates are selected. Although you do not have to place in a certain position to register as an Alternate - meaning even a rider who finished 20th place can register - riders with a DNS, DNF or DSQ for the overall finishing position are not eligible to register as an Alternate.

Regional Championship registration information
National Championship registration information
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
If a rider in a qualifying position decides not to compete at the Regional Championship, riders finishing below him at his area qualifier do not automatically move up one position. Each rider will maintain their original finishing position, and vacancies in the class will be filled by Alternates in power ranking order.
If a rider registers for the Regional Championship as an Alternate but improves their finishing position in the same class at another Area Qualifier, riders should immediately contact MX Sports by phone to update their class registration

Not sure how much it has changed since I've been there but alternates can be notified once registration closes OR right before the first moto. If you are #2 or 3 in line, you gear up and be ready in staging. There are times when a rider may get hurt in another race and an alternate may take their place in another class.

One year, I broke my foot at the regional but still qualified for 2 classes. We went to LL and ended up pulling out before practice. I was good friends with the first alternate and he ended up finishing top 15 in both classes.

Expensive to get there and hope to make the Gate.
cheaper than a vacation almost anywhere, or the same price, and you get to go do (try) what you love or spectate and party with friends, meet people, camp, explore, ect... take your bike to a practice track within distance?

sounds like a cool vacation to me!

You just need to register. Several alternates get a spot on the gate without showing up and waiting at the ranch. You need to figure out your power ranking. If you missed it by one and have a big class at your regional you will likely get in. If you rode a vet class out west and got like 4th out of 5 you are not going to have the strong power ranking that someone back east has who had a full gate at their regional.

There are 2 stages of alternates being selected and yes you have to pre-register and pay before the deadline if you want to be "on the alternate" list.

1. During Pre-Registration.
Once registration closes, if 42 racers that have direct tickets did not register for the class, alternates get seeded immediately by power ranking to make a list of 42. When they post the rider list prior to the race and if you are on it, then you ARE IN.

2. At the ranch.
Once the above rider list comes out, they then begin working on the remainder of the alternates list in order of power ranking and post that list for each class. If you are top 5 alternate in your class, you can ride practice day at the ranch and then wait and see if you get in.

This you basically have 2 chances to get in. One they call you ahead like 2 weeks before and the at the races if people still don't show up.

Even if you dont get a spot on the gate (hope you do), there is no better vacation on earth than a week a Lorettas. Way better than any outdoor national or supercross. The best of the best from 5 years old to 50. Just make sure to bring a golf cart or rent one.

1. During Pre-Registration...
Some riders qualify in more than 2 classes, and then pick when it's time...one of our fast kids from California qualified in Both Supermini classes and Both 125 classes and will decide after Mammoth which to race...so 2 spots will open up for alternates from just one rider...

2. At the ranch..
.riders ride and get hurt (or sick) right up to and including just before their 1st motos...MX Sports wants all those gates filled (as it should be) so they make every effort and give every opportunity to get alternates in. Many of the alternates waiting have already qualified in one class, and hoping to get in a second...it's a long week to just race one class...

Never knew this was the process. Either way hopefully everything works out and you get on the gate! What a lifetime experience if so! Best of luck to you sir! If you can let us know how it worked out.

There is one other rule that is easy to overlook regarding Alternates:

"A minimum of 50% of the guaranteed qualifying positions from each Regional will advance to the National, regardless of the riders’ power ranking."

This is essentially the "West Coast Rule" so to speak. It encourages people to come from the west coast where regional participation is limited.
