Ktm forks collapsed

Edited Date/Time 6/11/2021 6:50am
Had a bad crash at Wildcat creek Mx this past Saturday. Sunday I noticed the forks where 2/3 compressed with no tension on the tie straps. I didn’t load the bike but they must have been like that when it was loaded. Been struggling with why I crashed and wondering if it was a fork failure?
Anyone else experience anything like this? Riding 21 KTM 450 with 5 hours on it.

This was a thing with the early air forks... I have seen it happen in 16 husky’s and kawis

Good excuse to get some cone valves.

(For Peely): Did you check the torque on your sprocket bolts?

Had something similar recently on my 2020 RE husky. Landed off a couple jumps and just went all the way thru it’s stroke/ bottomed and almost endoed bad. Felt odd in turns etc, checked air pressure with two pumps and read the same. I swapped to a spring conversion after that so I can say if that was a legit issue. The air side I swapped with spring held pressure and seemed to function fine outside fork.

Are you guys using the supplied bike stand to hold the forks up in the stroke while transporting?

Reads like the old 'stuck down' syndrome that eventually happens with Air Springs that have a positive and negative air chamber.

The air transfers from the positive, spring chamber, into the negative chamber. Pulling / locking the suspension unit down in its travel. Generally, the damage / leak point is where the seal(s) that separate them wear at the point that the transfer port is. It will eventually happen, and, with MTB shocks, most manuals will point out the need for maintenance of the air seals. Which, precious few people do. I dealt with hundreds of such issues in all the years I was a Fox technician and Warranty manager.

But, with what was it, 5 hours on the bike?, well :

a) You could have faulty, dodgy seal / seals (relating to the air chambers) .

b) Or, in the prang you had, the forks twisted enough for the seal between the chambers was cocked / 'shocked', thus letting air transfer over.

c) Or, the forks are so twisted / bent / internally damaged, that said seal(s) can / will no longer be able to separate the chambers.

I hope for you, it's just either a or b .

Start with loosening the front wheel and see if that makes a difference.

If only someone had invented some sort of metal coil that could prevent this? Something springy perhaps?

Glad your ok

Thanks everyone. Broke T5,T6 and sternum in that crash! I was really bragging about the forks up to this point. I’ll check the bike out in a few days a let you know what I find.

Man...Hope you heal up. I won't be getting on one of those bikes. Hopefully you have a good Doc in your local area.

the 2021 AER 48 fork on the KTM 450 SXF cannot collapse completely under normal conditions even if there is outer seal damage, they design it that way.

that said, fork pressure MUST be checked before every ride

If you have photos of the fork, the seals, and the pressure cap on the left fork I know a few guys over at WP that can look at them. I own the same bike with no issues.

All KTM dirt bikes come from the dealer with a fork support/sidestand. It is to be used when the bike is tied town to limit compression of the air fork. it goes between the fork when the bike is being transported.

They don’t ALL come with them. But most of the motocross bikes do.

My 17 husky did it, get it fixed, it’s a cunt but not too costly. I also have a 17 ktm and 19 husky that all have 100hrs Nos and the other 2 have been fine.

Anyone want a second hand bike.....need to sell one to get a gas gas 300. Haha

So we got bike cleaned up and forks acted normal when we took it off of the stand. The air pressure was exactly as I set before the moto. Guess I’ll start using that fork support when I get back riding.

I highly suggest sending the forks to a professional for inspection. I don't think they "collapsed" from not transporting with the fork support. I've never used one on any KTM I've owned.

Well they come with the fork support for transporting for a reason.

The bleed from negative to positive chamber happens at a certain point in the stroke. If somehow the negative chamber gets too much air while compressed past that
point it will stick down. The skf glide kit ads a negative chamber bleed so you can fix that if it happens on the trail or something to get back to the truck. Haven’t had it go wrong personally (63hrs in on AERs).

Most likely the seal on the air leg failed, according to my WP guy.

Can that be caused by a bad crash?

You are correct. The bleed takes place when the forks are topped out. If they get imbalanced and "stick" down, all you have to do is force them to top out. Put your foot on top of the front tire and pull up on the bars. They will self bleed and all is well.

Damn, sorry to hear about your crash. Any surgery needed to repair the spine, or just bed rest?

As for your forks, I’ve seen some right out of the crate come sagged out about 1/3 of the way down. Talk to your dealer, I’m sure they’ll have heard about it before and try get you warranty for it!
