Going through some of the old pics being posted here got me thinking, back in the day everyone wore a kidney belt. I don't see the pros wearing, or promoting them anymore. Do they, or you still wear one?

I started wearing one again last year after years of not using one. I'm not sure why I quit wearing it, but I'm glad I started back.

I resurrected one and have been wearing it now for a few years. I never used to wear one, but feel naked without it.

I like to wear one, it doubles as a girdle to hold in my flabby gut. As a guy with a sit down riding style it really seems to help on rough tracks to be able to get out of bed the next day.

Have always worn one and now I am a bit older I need the extra support in my lower back. All the kids will say they find them restrictive but I think they are out of trend at the moment.
But a great big jangling bit of plastic and hinges around your neck is fine.

after switching to a 450 from a 2 stroke, I found I didn't need one anymore. Had to be due to the hard hit of the 250 and rough tracks

You just had to turn this into a 2s vs 4s thing! Laughing joking...

I guess I thought everyone was still wearing them...when I race I always do, when I practice I don't...

I'll be looking for one as soon as I start riding again!

Have to take a mandatory 90-120 day lay off due to donating a kidney to my cousin on the 14th & just after I put a down payment on a KTM 450 factory edition !

Any one know who has them in Big ol' fat boy size...LOL

I recall reading some time ago that Johnny O'Mara had incurred some damage to his kidneys or another internal organ from not wearing one for most of his career, he commented that the damage could have been prevented with use of a kidney belt...

I always wear one, (under jersey) lol. I forgot mine once and had to borrow one at the track. I feel naked without it.

If you don't mind having to pee every fifteen minutes when you are sixty years old I'd say don't wear one. They just get on the way.

Couple years ago dditched my No Fear kidney belt and picked up a new Gold Belt.

Have forgotten it a couple times and my back killed me for days

You could hook these two together and get them to fit. They are from my 30-32 inch waist days, so that would give you about 60 ". Is that enough ?

I wear a TLD one, it is stiff but not too restrictive. At 41 I have lower back problems so I'll take any additional support I can get

Man, I'm glad someone started this thread. After always using one, I stopped wearing mine a few years ago, not sure why.
As a matter a fact, I gave it away.
I'm 56 now and my lower back aches bad after every ride. For some reason I totally forgot about a kidney belt.
I'm going in tomorrow to my local dealer to order one.

Thanks for all the feedback

I have a fox one from probably 6 years ago or so. Very flexible, wear under jearsey and don't even notice. I can't ride without it, went to track and realized I forgot my kidney belt and neck support pad thing (older evs) and I couldnt even ride.

I wear one under my jersey. Tried without for awhile and definitely noticed some back discomfort after riding . I won't go without one now.

That's awesome! Praying that all goes well for you both.

I used to wear a kidney belt but haven't for years and don't miss it.

Do they really do anything?

just out of curiosity, what's the science behind the kidney belt? Is it supposed to support the back or internal organs (i.e. kidneys)

It is simple. The lazy sit down riders do need them. Guys who stand up and let their legs do the work don't need them. Riding styles have changed. Even the Pro's sat alot more 10-15 years ago. As we get older, a little thicker and are just enjoying riding we tend to sit more. As we sit more the bumps are soaked up by our butt and not out legs. That then jars are organs around much more, causing pain. Stand up more, your body will feel better and you can speeded up your lap times

Hey bud, as someone who had a kidney removed due to cancer, I commend you for donating one. It's a rough surgery and voluntarily doing it is a badass move.

BTW, do you remember me? I'm the tall one in my avatar. I rode your old big maico at Cycleranch one day right after I was coming back from a 16 week layoff due to a bad broken collarbone. Mr. Berg was there also.

I raced at Splendora many times as well.

Oh yeah, kidney belts, I wore one up until 2002, not sure why I quit wearing them, they kept the jersey tucked in nicely and prevented plumbers crack!

in the '70's, i read in all the magazines how the retired pros had to pee all the time because they didnt wear them, so i started wearing them. in '81, i cracked my ribs, so i started wearing 2 so i could still race (yes, it was a stupid thing to do). now, i have to pee all the time, a good night is when i can sleep all the way through, but, hey, I did all i could do
