Was waxing nostalgia and then focused on Wardy's kidney belt.
That was the worst piece of gear ever produced in the world™. Jammed down our throats and protected nothing.

It was like yo, moto aint hard enough, here is a gigantic piece of velcro with our logo on the back side that doesn't do shit. Also it makes you feel uncomfortable as hell.

I wear one for a little extra back support. Not sure if it helps but it sure as hell doesn't hurt.

I do, it keeps my stomach tucked in other wise I would stop wearing it.

First one I owned was the "Gold Belt"

never had one.. do they really do anything?

Seems crazy that they had the kidney belt back then but the neck brace wasn't even on the radar.

How many kidney belt naysayers rode with four inches of travel?

I ride in Caineville where there are a lot of rain ruts. After a couple days of riding, my lower back begins to hurt from crossing all the rain ruts. I just get a sharp jolt of pain over every bump. My solution has been to put on a kidney belt. I was amazed the first time I put one on and immediately the pain went away. I still only put it on after the pain comes because I find them a little uncomfortable.

I have always wore one, I feel weird riding without it. Say what you want but I got tangled up in a 1st turn wreck once and landed on someones bike and after that race I noticed a nice gouge in the kidney belt. I can only imagine how that would have felt if I didn't have it.

GuyB always the voice of reason.

Bikes in the early 70's had only 4 inches of rear travel and 32' seat height so it made the transition from seated to standing more difficult than later on with long travel so you were on the seat more back then.

More seat time + short travel = blowed out kidneys and such. And that brings you to kidney belts.

I have a 1974 Suzuki TM400 Cyclone for you to ride for anyone who has doubts.

Back in 1978 I crashed practicing and was scabbed up around my back and hip. I raced the next weekend without my Kidney belt and the next day my pee was bloody and I felt like I had been kicked in the back, I went to doctor and he said it was caused from not wearing the Kidney belt. I do not know if once your body is use to wearing one you can not go without one or what?

ditto. I stopped this year when my velcro had become to worn out from being stretched so hard. I figured out without it that was extra room to get my pants buttoned too. I rode a couple times without it and just kept on and haven't bought another one.

I wore one years ago, if I didn't wear it my sides felt they were exploding anytime I landed hard. Doesn't make a difference anymore so I leave it off

I'm 23 and wear one, I've tried without and it feels as sketchy as riding without a helmet.
It covers the vital area between the bottom of your chest protector and waistline. Take a bar to the gut without a kidney belt on and you're in trouble.

You mean I can stop wearing it?

Uhm, young ones, it's not there to protect your kidneys from being speared by a bar or footpeg.
It's there to reduce kidney (and other internal organ) vibration, causing "back pain".
I agree with a few others on here- I'd ride without most of my kit before losing the belt.

I wouldn't think of racing a 2-3+ Hr. GNCC / Hare Scramble without one. Tried it once and hurt like hell after an hour or so.

I wore one for all of my 20 years racing. Decided to not wear one for my last season.

I had a hernia op the end of that season. Coincidence?

Thanks for bringing this up!
Bigger idiots are those who bought early necks braces! Resulting in broken collarbones and broken shoulders everywhere! those companies should be held accountable for this fear mongering! Threatening broken necks! Simple tip overs resulting in surgery and then 'being happy with a broken collarbone , cus it wasn't your neck' is their sales pitch! This is a way bigger issue than kidney belts!

Good point. Not only that, but rebound damping that would make a mechanical bull seem like a merry-go-round ride. I don't wear one these days, but you wouldn't have caught me without one back in the 70's and 80's.
