Was waxing nostalgia and then focused on Wardy's kidney belt.
That was the worst piece of gear ever produced in the world™. Jammed down our throats and protected nothing.
It was like yo, moto aint hard enough, here is a gigantic piece of velcro with our logo on the back side that doesn't do shit. Also it makes you feel uncomfortable as hell.
YOU NEED THIS
The Shop
First one I owned was the "Gold Belt"
Seems crazy that they had the kidney belt back then but the neck brace wasn't even on the radar.
Bikes in the early 70's had only 4 inches of rear travel and 32' seat height so it made the transition from seated to standing more difficult than later on with long travel so you were on the seat more back then.
More seat time + short travel = blowed out kidneys and such. And that brings you to kidney belts.
I have a 1974 Suzuki TM400 Cyclone for you to ride for anyone who has doubts.
Pit Row
With 4 inches of travel.
It covers the vital area between the bottom of your chest protector and waistline. Take a bar to the gut without a kidney belt on and you're in trouble.
Uhm, young ones, it's not there to protect your kidneys from being speared by a bar or footpeg.
It's there to reduce kidney (and other internal organ) vibration, causing "back pain".
I agree with a few others on here- I'd ride without most of my kit before losing the belt.
I had a hernia op the end of that season. Coincidence?
Bigger idiots are those who bought early necks braces! Resulting in broken collarbones and broken shoulders everywhere! those companies should be held accountable for this fear mongering! Threatening broken necks! Simple tip overs resulting in surgery and then 'being happy with a broken collarbone , cus it wasn't your neck' is their sales pitch! This is a way bigger issue than kidney belts!
