Yikes. Hopefully no severe repercussions for MXGP and American SX/MX.

Spin off ≠ sell

Yamaha spun off it's motor division decades ago.

I was not sure of this strange link so I searched and found that it is true.

Official press release is here:

https://global.kawasaki.com/news_201102-2e.pdf

That is quite a big news, no drama but they will for sure look more at the bottom line rather than as a part of their branding effort.

They aren't selling anything. It sounds like there will be a separate business entity, operating outside of the Heavy Industries structure. A "spin off," not a sell off.

Google restructured itself as Alphabet. It did this for financial purposes and to move assets, debts, operating expenses, and the myriad of other financial machinations into a new business entity.

Reading the fine print, it seems like this will streamline the production of dirtbikes for Kawasaki, and eliminate some of the red-tape of having to go to corporate to make final decisions.

TBH something like this could open the door for new 2 strokes. If you read into it KHI is very environMENTALly positioned.

Interesting, but my $0.02 as a news analyst is this is likely a zero-burger. The big takeaway here is Kawi isn't super bullish on the longer term outlook for the sport. That may move money into other places, like (just speculating) e-bike development, little dude(ette) e-dirt bikes and God knows what else.

Overall however, this is more of an internal change, not a top down change.

This should be good news for us consumers of their motorcycles. From their press release...

"The Power Sports Business which comprises a part of the Motorcycle & Engine Business, includes motorcycles and off-road four wheelers, and is Kawasaki's only mass-production consumer-facing business. Spinning off this business will speed up decision making, and by offering products and services in sync with customers - including new lifestyle offerings - Power Sports will further enhance its role as the flagship Group business building the strong Kawasaki brand.
In the short term, we will continue working to improve our financial situation. However, when taking a broad view of the industry as a whole, it faces significant issues such as an aging customer base and compliance with environmental regulations. Kawasaki is strengthening intra- industry cooperation - such as through joint development of electric drive and advanced safety technologies as well as greater commonality of functional parts - in order to catalyze growth in the Power Sports Business and achieve market revitalization."

Oh and they aren't selling anything as other have pointed out. They're basically refocusing the business which should be a positive change for the moto industry.

You will never see a Japanese brand bought by KTM.
Well. I wouldn't bet against it. They're a fast growing company with plenty of "vision".

KHI is large. So increased autonomy for the small bike and engine department should be good.

Enough with the freaking KTMs. Great bikes but there’s enough already. We need more choices, not less.
