Alessi has always used his excellent starts to his advantage. I just dont see how giving up 100cc to factory 450's will help his situation.

X2, with out a holeshot and 2 or 3 smooth laps to sprint out front, gonna be a long year for mike.

Cairoli holeshotted in Mantova, in muddy, deep dirt.

Disadvantage, not so much.

Who actually thinks it will be legal to race in the AMA nationals?

KTM has to have to have 400 untis in the country for sale by the end of May for it to be legal.

if not how will they be able to bend the rules to be able to race it?

You have that one year works rule! Just like they did with the first YZF 400 etc etc. After that you have to have the minimum of 400 ready to sell on dealers showroom.

Don't you only get one shot at the works rule? I think KTM used it a few years ago.

KTM used up their one time works bike exemption for Lance Smail several years ago. They bent the rules to have the 250 SXF legal for the factory team when it first came out. Based on past history the AMA will probably let them get away with it again if the production units never arrive.

How did Suzuki get to race the new 2010 RMZ in Supercross in January without any on showroom floors?

Does it really matter if they bend the rules for KTM ... at least we will get the bike for next year and something really outside the box that most likely benefit many riders that don't like the 450 but are too big for a 250f......I am one of those guys

I for one think the bike won't be a huge advantage but I think it has a lot more potential than some are giving it credit for....Not only will it be a lot lighter and MA is around 160 right? But as a works bike straight from the factory with some engine work it WILL produce just as much HP as the 450's plus be easier to handle and ride. IMO Caroli will dominate on it once the GP's are in full swing and if MA doesn't do well and blames the bike for being a 350 rather than a 450 then it will just be an excuse. A PC 250f can almost run the same laptimes as a 450 outdoors in some tracks ....why not the 350?

Mike is a pretty light guy to begin with so I doubt his starts should suffer from any lack of horsepower. We shall have to wait and see.

And although he seems to be in great shape, because he is of 'smaller stature', I should think it would be easier for him to muscle the 350 around ... as well as less tiring over the course of a full moto. It should also be more agile and able to cut / grab lines that would be more difficult on the full 450.

Advantage.

Hey, didn't james race a 2010 YZF450 at the Open with AMA sanctioning? If I remember correctly, weren't there only 4-5 of those bikes even in the country at the time?

They put Mike on the biggest bike they could as soon as they could when he was an amateur because he was always better on a bigger bike. Now they want to take 100 off that bike?

Disadvantage for Alessi.

Explain to me how the 350 will produce the same power as the 450? Even if they could get the peak horsepower similar, the torque curves would not even be close. Like the old saying in drag racing goes "Theres no replacement for displacement."

Now im not saying that the bike would produce slower laptimes, the lighter weight will help with corner speed, but like tommycroftsbarber wrote "Imagine the Glen Helen start. . ."

I heard thru the grapevine that one of the major KTM dealers in Boise said that there will only be about 200 in the states and most will go to support riders. The price tag for those that are for sale is probably going to be astronomical too. Just speculation at this point.

The 350 won't need as much torque as a 450 to get the bike going....and to further prove my point didn't caroli win his GP title on a sleeved down YZ450...to a 400? He didn't seem to be suffering form any lack of displacement.

I understand peak HP should be easy to match with some minor engine work but the torque numbers? I believe that factory KTM shouldn't have any problem building a motor that will be more than competitive....If I have read correctly in the past, most top level pro's run their 450's mostly stock in the engine with mods only designed to move and put the power where it best suits the rider's style.......That 350 will be more than enough to win any outdoor race it is entered in. I for one would much rather ride a 350 than a 450 after riding 250f's a big boire 280f and a 450 all of the same brand the 350 would be the ideal engine for me.

i will be looking at a KTM 350 when they come out.
would a 300 2 stroke be a match for a 350 4 stroke?
would be intrested in a test of the 2 heads up that
would be good.

Even if the 350 doesn't succeed, I believe a lot of what they learn from the new bike will benefit all the other KTM motorcycles, frame, linkage, etc.

Couldn't they bore/stroke it out to a larger cc and still be legal?

I'm sure if anyone can get a start on it, Alessi can... He'll be fine...
