He is going to jump out of a plane and land in a big net.

the video ends with him saying "Later this year, I will be" and then cuts off. My mind automatically finished his sentence with SPLAT!

With the way tech has been going, i've been waiting for somone to jump without a chute to water (by using a suit to reduce speed).... Trying to hit that little net seems a whole lot more sketchy...

I hope not, but it would not surprise me too much either.

How funny would it be if he pulls it off and hits the net, then rebounds back out and falls from 100'

Didn't some guy already do that and landed on a bunch of boxes?

Well, let's see. The drawing seems to show a 200' height to the platform. Assuming the full 200 feet can be used for deceleration, and a terminal velocity of 120 mph without a wingsuit, you get an average of 4.8g of deceleration. That's certainly doable, but the g-forces can quickly spike well beyond that if he doesn't land exactly in the middle and if the rig is not designed correctly.

the bigger issue is the force of impact upon contact with the net. The net and pulley system will have to be very lightweight yet very stiff. If it's too heavy, he will be using his face to accelerate it from 0 to 120 in basically no time and it could crush him without him even hitting the ground. If the net is too stretchy, it will concentrate more of the force on his torso and bend him backwards like a pretzel. If it's too stiff, it will hurt like a bitch but also the spring rate of the net will cause it to rebound before the secondary spring (the air system controlling the pulleys) is able to move and would cause him to bounce off the net.

So even if he does nail the landing, which to my untrained eye seems nearly impossible without a parachute or wingsuit to steer, he could still be seriously injured.

You can free fall slower than 120 mph and I would think he'd be falling pretty "flat" to be going as slowly as possible when he lands.

Yeah. I would assume he will be using some sort of wing suit to help control speed and direction.

He says no wingsuit or parachute.

and yeah, he might be able to get slower. I have no idea what is possible, that's just what a few websites said is the terminal velocity of a parachutist during free fall.

And actually I think a wingsuite would make it harder to hit the target since a wingsuit works best with a lot of lateral velocity rather than straight vertical free-fall. I looked into it a bit more (yes, boring day at work) and it seems like the more you try to slow down, the harder it would be to stay in a straight vertical line. Kind of like when you stick you hand out the window of the car. If you hold your hand flat to the ground, it has the least wind resistance and is easiest to adjust up and down. If you hold it flat against the wind, it creates the most wind resistance but is also the hardest to keep steady.

In short, this jump sounds sketchy as hell but very intriguing from a physics perspective.

I'm surprised that local authorities would even let him attempt this.
And that right there is one of the things that's wrong with this country.

If you're an adult and can pay the bills, you should be allowed to do anything you want as long was it's not hurting anyone else.

Switzerland has it right. If you want to show up and climb the north wall of the Eiger in winter wearing tennis shoes some people will probably try to talk you out of it. If you try anyway and die, your family/estate will have to pay the bill for hauling your frozen body off the mountain.

Of course air rescue insurance there is super affordable........
