If they assign him one, he'll be in the low 70s (71, 72).

Herlings would have to actually hold an AMA Pro License, not simply a permission/provisional license to earn a # for 2018.
2016 - Cedric Soubeyras scored 59 points and did not receive a # in 2017
2015 - Shaun Simpson scored 31 points and did not receive a # in 2016
Kaven Benoit earned enough points last year to receive a number but from what I was told he raced through the CMA or something like it so did not receive a number.
I think international riders are given permission through their racing affiliation FIM/CMA/etc. Not exactly sure how it all works but they don't need an AMA license in order to line up and race.
Herlings most likely won't be assigned a number.
