If you would have told me after 2009 that 22 or 7 would never win a championship again I would never believe you.
To me, its probably one of the craziest things in the sport, having dominated for so long, and swapping titles between them the 2 previous years

Agreed, there were also a crap ton of coulda woulda shouldas and what ifs with Chad and Stewart.

Chad was on rails a few times until injurys set him back in sx and mx.

And james had all sorts of derailments too.

I've said it before, who would of thought in 05/06 era that Stew would of only had 2 titles!? Everyone had him pegged to beat all of MCs records. Im not saying he failed, just crazy to think.

The 2010 Yamaha killed Stewart. He still would have won the 2010 sx title if he didn’t get hurt IMO but that thing randomly bucked him so many times

Totally agree, if JBS never left kawi his career would have been totally different and perhaps be the G.O.A.T

I think that wrist injury has more to do with it than anything else. He just never seemed to ride 100% right after that imo. But I agree it s a huge bummer to see these two never win a title again after that. So much potential between the two. Legends!

If you had told me that 10 YEARS later Reed was still racing pro SX, I would have never believed it haha!

Reed was in the battle for another 2 championships until bad luck set him back.
Same said with JS7.

Dungey at his prime rode just like Reed did in the early 2000's.

Injuries derailed them both, Stewart sitting out the 09 MX title should go down as the single dumbest descion in the history of the sport. The fastest Motocross racer in the world decides to skip outdoors when your only 23. Then he didn't agree with the Yamaha and by the time he got rolling on the Suzukis he kept getting hurt or doing something stupid. Reed started riding faster than he ever had in 2011 outdoors and it he got launched in Millville and crashed out in Texas 2012 and that IMO was the best Reed ever looked along with A2 2014 and then the injuries kept getting Chad too. Plus the Ryan's were there and trained harder than either Stewart or Reed.

I remember an interview Matthes did with MC coming Into the 2010 SX season and they started talking about Stewart like it was a forgone conclusion that he was gonna beat MCs win record and he only had 36 wins at the time which is half of what MC had. Both of them talked like 10 + wins a year for the next Four years would be easy for Stewart.

I recall that as well. No one can guess where things will be over the long run.

No one would have bet on McGrath or Dungey going into their rookie seasons.

No one would bet on Villopoto dominating 4x years after snapping his leg in '10.

No one would have bet Roczen and Tomac would have exactly zero supercross titles at this stage.

Reed would have won 2011 if Stewart didn't plow him off the track after getting out of control in the whoops.

Probably would have won 2012 if he didn't destroy his knee (would have been amazing battles with Villopoto that year)

Had good speed by 2014 again before the big whoop crash.

James' crashes are well known and a lot concussion related. Too many injuries to them both.

Could say the same about a lot of other super fast guys not winning any championships, because of constant injuries.

Yeah I remember the same interview. It was stamped at that point that Stew would have his win record beat. What is he 22 short of it?
