More Back Surgery Required for Jeremy Martin, Will Miss 2019 Season, Extended Through 2021 season with GEICO Honda
Corona, CA (December 17, 2018) – GEICO Honda’s Jeremy Martin has received the bad news that the back surgery required after his huge crash at the Tennessee Motocross National in June was not successful. A new surgery has been scheduled for January at the Steadman Clinic in Colorado, and Martin will have to begin the entire rehabilitation process anew. Due to this, he will miss the entire 2019 racing season, with hopes to be back on a motorcycle in the third quarter of the new year.

Martin’s GEICO Honda contract was set to expire at the end of the 2019 season, but the team has extended his deal through the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Martin, the winner of two supercross races in 2018, had five vertebrae fused to help heal a burst fracture in his lower back. Six months into his recovery, he had begun light training only to find out just 10 percent of the burst fracture had healed.

“The get this news was a complete kick in the gut,” said Martin. “Racing is all I know and to sit out the entire 2019 season is going to be one of the biggest challenges I have ever faced. To have [team owners] Jeff [Majkrzak] and Ziggy [Rick Zielfelder] commit to me long-term proves they believe in me, and that motivates me to come back and overcome adversity. That’s been the story of my career, though. Nothing has been given to me, I have worked and earned everything I’ve won. This will be no different.”

Martin will return to racing for the 2020 season, and the GEICO Honda team wishes him the best during his surgery, rehabilitation and recovery.

With Martin on the sidelines, the 2019 GEICO Honda lineup will feature four riders. Christian Craig recently suffered a fracture in his thumb which moves him to the 250SX East Region of Monster Energy Supercross. Australian supercross rookie Hunter Lawrence will join him there, with RJ Hampshire and Chase Sexton kicking off the 2019 season for the team at the 250SX West Region opening round at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California on January 5th.

That's really cool of Geico Honda to extend him. I remember them doing pretty much the same thing with Wil Hahn and it was well worth it. Hopefully the surgery goes well and JMart can focus on healing and get back to ripping soon.

well that sucks big time, but if the surgery gets him back to 100% for 2020 then fantastic! All the best for your recovery JMart ! Also big ups to Geico for extending his contract!

Bad news, hoping this doesn't derail him from any further success in the sport.

Crap deal but way cool of his team to stick behind him. Hope his recovery goes well and he’s 100% ready to go in 2020.

Everyone saying “this is whats wrong with our sport” when _____ happens... not Honda theyre everything right. If this was the NFL hed be jobless now and then probably never play (race) again.

Maybe it's for the better. Maybe he makes it back this year in time for outdoors, and probably struggles to get back up to speed and loses a little confidence. This way, he can get ready the right way with a proper offseason, race supercross, then roll into outdoors.

That's a bummer. Sometimes everything goes your way. and sometimes the only luck you get is back luck.
FCR showing they're top notch and not only supporting him this year but into the next couple. That's very commendable

I, for one would love to see him get totally healthy and return to form. But truth be told, I just want him healthy for his own well being. He’s a damn good kid, with a great family, and an entire life ahead of himself. That’s my main concern....

Check the press release on the homepage, and there's a video that Yoshimura did with Jeremy and the team.

He’s doing the right thing by letting his body heal rather than coming back too quick and risking injury again or further long term health issues. I have no doubt he can return to the physical form he was prior. Mentally, I question it. I think rarely any rider will be the same after a major injury and a year away from actual racing is going to be a big hurdle. Kenny is one of the few.

That being said, he just did a pod with Weigant and said his time away had him
thinking about his life post racing. He’s mid 20’s now, realistically if he comes back and races he’s only got 2-3 years left. I hope he does, watching him ride outdoors is amazing, but wouldn’t be surprised to see a retirement sooner than later.

Jeremy is a 2 time Champion and has nothing to prove to us. That injury was serious and we all knew it. Much like Cole Seely. and KR94. It is awesome that Honda and their teams have stuck with them all, and they are Super Hero's. I wouldn't blame one of them for hanging up their boots, but respect their right to carry on. This sport is brutal, and if you can walk away when the time comes then enjoy the rest of your life then go for it.

That sucks for JMart and for his back to only have been 10% healed , wtf?? Id be trying to get some answers from the doctor, drs team, and hospital from where the surgery happened. Thats not right. Sucks that hes gotta take the whole year off, but JMarts never been known as a slacker and i believe he'll come back stronger than ever. Now i wonder if Geico is just going to run a 4 man team this year or try and get a fill in? And if they run a 4 man team, do you think Craig moves up to the 450 class for outdoors so then theyd have 2 vacant 250s? Id really like to see Justin Hoeft get a chance at a fill in spot for the full year. Didnt he have a deal with TLD KTM that took him into the start of his pro career, but then kinda gave that all up when his little brother passed out? Understandably so. Id love to see what he could do with a bike like this and knowing he has a full year on it so he could hust focus on training and not have to worry about anything else. The kid has incredible skills and i think with a year on that bike, he'll earn himself a contract extension with them.
