During the single fire restart I saw he had kick start his bike. I'm curious why JB10 doesn't have/run an electric start bike.

Moto Concepts said the battery system was 7+/- lbs heavier than the kick starter.

I thought the "new" Honda cases didn't allow for the installation of a kick starter like the 2017 machines?

weight savings since they dont run ti bolts and the engine actually runs a little more 'free' without the starter motor

Think if I recall they talked about it over on racerx while back. Think it was the weight thing but not positive.

The 2018 cases are the same as '17. The team removed the starters and battery systems, then added back the kickstarter. As mentioned above it's for weight savings primarily.

2017 came with kick standard and E start option. 2018 E start standard only with bung in case hole and kick option. Using the 2017 kick start parts and deleting the E start parts saves weight over convienience

Too bad they can't fit up the KTM e start and battery system to that CRF, Why is the Honda set up so heavy?

The KTM system has to be in that 7 lb range as well.

Did less weight save him more time than kick starting his bike?

Which means the answer is "Yes, the less weight saved him more time than kick starting his bike."

ML512,

Thx. I haven't paid close attention and didn't realize 17 & 18 cases were the same.

His mechanic was on Pulp and said he just didn’t want the weight IIRC.

For a rider like Justin who rarely crashes a lighter bike is definitely more helpful than a heavier one with an electric starter that he never uses. Race bikes are all built trying to save weight anywhere possible and Honda is still behind KTM in that aspect

Whatever the case, the dude is riding great.

He's a few days short of 34, and sits 4th in the points on a non-factory bike.

I don't think HRC Honda is to worried about extra weight with the starter since they run a 2nd unit in case of a possible crash.

When you remove the e-start on a 2018 model, you also have to go back to the 2017 wire harness because it includes a capacitor. No capacitor or battery equals no fuel pressure.

In other words- electric start is too heavy for SX? SMH. What's the point?I guess KTM guys either have lighter bikes or choose to deal with the extra 7 POUNDS. Unsure

Id say its rider preference, to some the weight matters others it doesnt...
Every other guy here says once your moving you never notice it but they are hardly riding at braytons level...

For myself in the woods ive got 250 4t 250 2t 220 2t 200 2t and the 220 wins has some of the grunt of the bigger cc with the light weight. I feel i can pull trials like manuvers in the super tight and tricky stuff on it..but im no jonny walker..

Probably a very inexpensive way to drop 6-7 pounds of bike weight.

A few years ago it wouldve been thought absurd to ADD 7 pounds to a high level sx race bike....plus the extra drag on the engine at that level is probably pretty noticeable....aside from crashing its not THAT big of a deal to kickstart your bike weve been doing it since the beginning of time with mx bikes and all of a sudden its blasphemy to not have it as standard equipment on all bikes? I still dont agree with the electric start philosiphy but thats just me and ive never minded kicking my bike. I spent a day riding the piss outta a 2014 KTM300 with electric start and didnt think it was such a remarkable thing to have....kickstarting my bike has always been a part of riding for me

I rode my RMZ450 on tight trails with rocks for about three minutes before I turned around and went back to a moto track and never tried that again. No fun, too top-heavy and bulky. But I was raised on two-strokes. I wouldn't ride anything bigger than a 250 four-stroke off-road, but 450s always seemed too heavy for me anyhow.

I’m talking about Honda in general, MCR doesn’t have factory support, they do motors by themselves and their bikes aren’t really close to the HRC ones in terms of new parts and stuff. It’s common knowledge that on their production level CRF they’re not at the level of KTM and Husqvarna (wich is the top) in terms of bike weight, there’s a slight difference that you can definitely fell
