Ha. I think most have us have done that at one time. Or lined up next to a "buddy" who helped with that.

The one time I did it I didn't get nearly as far as that cat did. He made a pretty quick recovery.

Thanks. Felt like a scrub but I got back as quick as I could.

I had a spark plug come loose but not off and was left on the side of the track tinkering whilst everybody lapped me before I checked it. I was so convinced it was the fuel..... Noob error

Concrete start, boil over all your coolant before the gate drops

Hahaha. I've done it before Smile I've also run out of gas going off a jump (a medium size single) because I forgot to top off my tank and luckily the only thing I hurt was my pride!

I think being forced to start backwards because you got caught riding in the pits is up there.

I've got a good one that was earlier this year as a rookie moto dad for my kid's first arenacross. (at 4 yrs old)

His pw died as the gate guy was pointing at people, but I didn't notice it somehow. I think just being surrounded by cobras I couldn't hear it. He totally acted like he was doing a regular start. Never looked back at me or anything, just sat there as everyone took off. Almost as if he didn't even know his own bike was off! haha

I got tangled up in peoples handlebars and crashed 40 feet out of the gate... twice on the same day! Now that sucks.

Did it once. Became an obsession to check it after that.

My brother and I were lined up next to each other one time and we both wanted to beat each other soooo bad that we both dumped the clutch and stalled while still straddling the gate. It was hilarious!

Your get a good start and stand up for the first jump. Then something sharp pokes into and jams in the bottom of your foot.

Yep, that happened to me at Clarks Branch, Ore. 40 rider gate too. I was at the bottom of a 3 or 4 bike pile.
Couldn't move at all. The promoter walked up and asked if we were trying to build something. Not funny at the time.
Got up without a front fender and finished the race a lap down. Same track, different race. Finally got a holey right before the engine died at the end of the 1st turn. Petcock was off. Couldn't hide that right in front of the grandstand.

Luckily this was one thing I was super anal about. Every single moto on the gate I would reach down and check to make sure gas was on and choke was off like half a dozen times before the board went up. Seen it happen to others and scared the hell out of me.

Pulled the wrong lever getting my quad into gear on the line once. Gate dropped, I dumped the clutch with the engine on the rev limiter and shot backwards into the woods. I had accidentally put the damn thing in reverse.

Never made that mistake again, always checked by rolling an inch or two to make sure I was in the right gear!

Yep. Budds Creek 1980. 125C class. Won the first moto after a great battle with some guy on YZ - (passed him for good on the pit road off camber on the last lap!). Holeshot the second moto and made it to the old dropoff/creek crossing before it died. This was in the day of full gates. I figured it out quickly and got going before I was way down. Got up to second but ran out of time to catch the leader, who just happened to be the dude on the YZ! Lol. Second overall. Boo. My Mom was there that day - she hardly ever came to races - the starts really freaked her out - and I really wanted to win.

Yes, there is a worse way.

Ever have a 2 stroke start backwards and not know it?

It's weird and embarrassing AF

Funny you should say that as I was going to post about a guy on a 500Yamaha 2-smoke. Must have been about 72. Was watching the start and the guy revved it up, dumped the clutch and shot backwards about 15 feet. Funny thing was that it was the local Yamaha dealer.

That happened to Heath Voss back when he was racing schoolboy at the local level here!
