Inexpensive lap timer?

I put my gopro footage into sony vegas and mark each lap

I use the DRC sp1 timer, it is integrated into a bar pad. You have to press a button that looks like a green kill switch to register each lap. I'm not a big fan of that system, but it is fairly cheap.
I like to set the timer when I practice and race, so I know how long each moto is. It has a big screen and is a lot easier to take a quick glance at over a jump, than a watch strapped to the bar pad.

Look up LapKing in social media . They have a option for your phone in a case and it uses gps or some new news coming out about right!

I am thinking of making a "timing gate" that uses photoelectric sensors and an Arduino microcontroller to log my laps at my house. Be around $50 to and some time to make, but would be highly accurate and I could also connect a large display so that i can see my last lap time as I go by. Maybe not practical for someone whom is looking to practice on public tracks though.

For that I'd recommend MX Buddy app. Its like $5 and just uses your phones gps signal. Not the most accurate, but I believe it would be consistent enough to determine lap time improvements or not. Haven't gotten to test it out yet.

I run a cheap bicycle computer (glue a little magnet to one of the disk bolts and mount the pick up on the fork guard). I did it originally on my dual sport so I could have a speedo. I liked having the info (time, average speed, etc.) so I put one on my MX bike. Works well, just no individual lap times (unless you want to reach down and push the button every lap).

Check out the LapKing App for your phone. It's not really a "training app" but it is a lot of fun to use and is very accurate.

Not to mention the guys who run it are as cool as the other side of the pillow. Check it out.

If you are looking for a GPS watch (like a lot of guys are posting the Polar) you can get a very similar watch for super cheap called an Amazfit Bip. It has the same GPS and heart rate monitoring (without the chest strap) that most of these watches have. If you want simple lap timing and more fitness specific things (heart-rate monitor) then the watches are a great idea. You could use the watch and sync it up with MXBuddy if you wanted to a get a ball park range of your lap times too.

The biggest thing with these fitness/gps sensors is the HZ the GPS operates. Most of these are 1hz which is 1 location update per 1 second. Most of the GPS lap timers (LitPro, CrossBox) operate at 10hz+. So if you are wanting an accurate lap timer, you may be more interested in a GPS dongle like the XGPS160 and then an app like MXBuddy. Or get a LitPro. Pretty much all the watches work at 1hz. This isn't terrible and I can see my lap times pretty well operating at that. But if you are wanting to take 1 second off your lap times, you'll need something more accurate.

Cheapest/Less Accurate Options:
Find a way to carry your phone on your bike and use that
Get a fitness watch and sync with MX Buddy or other lap timing apps

Middle of the road cost - super accurate lap times:
XGPS160 Sensor and any motocross timing app
Any GPS you can get that's 10hz+ and offers exports in tcs, gpx, or kml file types, then upload to LitPro app or MX Buddy app
Get a generic racing GPS timer

Most Expensive but best results:
Garmin Virb 360
LitPro
GoPro Hero Black

Well that’s convenient... LapKing appears to have all of 1 track(Pala) available on the entire west coast.

The watch he recommends can be bought for around $125 refurbished even less used. Match that with a heart rate monitor strap and you get all kinds of cool data with the garmin connect app.

garmin 310 xt or garmin 910xt. As low as 89 bucks to 169 bucks e-bay or amazon. Scratch and dents that are really not scratch and dent.

I have the 910xt with auto lap and it works very well. At least for my purposes. Sometimes it ships a lap when the track is not very spread out, but very helpful for keeping track of lap times.

Try Harry's LapTime app. It is available on Android and Apple.

Even litpro is only for iPhone it's the only reason I don't have one

I strap an old iPhone5 to the upper tube of my forks, just behind the number plate and use RacerOne.
Nice features, battery lasts a lot and you can keep it running for the day and close the session when you are done.
