What a beautiful, honest post from Toby. My heart aches for him just reading it. Thank you, Toby, for your efforts to try to save your friend.

Rest in peace, Paulo. He rode for Hero Motorsports. Nothing could be more fitting.

Riders are currently on the liaison to the start of Stage 9.

The race must go on, that is how Paulo would want it.

Here's hoping for a safe run to the finish for all.

Pretty good day for Brabec, only lost a few minutes and he's set up with a good start position for the 500km+ Stage tomorrow.

Skyler Howes is staying solid as hell, sitting in 9th OA and top Privateer!

3 days to go, tomorrow is the start of another Marathon Stage so the riders will get no outside assistance tomorrow night and only 10 minutes to do bike work.

The second half of the upcoming marathon stage (stage 11) will be very interesting- I expect Price and Quintanilla to go on the attack and do everything they can to derail Brabec.

I agree.

I'd feel a lot better about it if Ricky can use his start position tomorrow to pad his lead over those guys by a couple minutes. Everyone will be in bike preservation mode so he shouldn't have to go to crazy to get a little more cushion.

Even though he's sitting in the top ten overall, Skyler Howes is not actually racing in the same class as the factory riders. The factory guys are in the "elite" class (G1.1). Skyler is in the "super production" class (G2.1), which he is leading by over an hour.

Does that mean he doesn't participate in the marathon service rules like the elite riders?

From the app;

11:51 Stage 10 between Haradh and Shubaytah interrupted
Due to the fact that the resources committed to ensure the safety of the competitors are virtually all entirely mobilised and with a deterioration in weather conditions (strong winds), the Race Directors have decided to halt the 10th stage between HARADH and SHUBAYTAH after 345 km (NEU OUT). The competitors from all the categories will thus travel to the marathon bivouac in link stage mode.

Apparently stage 10 was incredibly dangerous (e.g. "lots of drops") and with strong winds they would not be able to dispatch helicopter support if the need arose, so they cancelled the stage accordingly.

Sounds like they made the correct call after the past few days

Honda is getting closer and closer. Brabec still in the lead with 25 minutes on Quintanilla and 27 minutes on teammate Joan Barreda.

They don't run without Helicopter support , and they don't fly if its iffy, Thierry Sabine , the original founder of the race was lost in a helicopter crash back in the early days, they don't take chances these days .

Well it seems the KTM streak comes to and end, barring some freak occurence this dakar is Ricky's.
I'm afraid to hope for too much....I still have PTSD from last year...:-). Fingers crossed that the Honda stays together....

So Brabec has a 10 minute going into final it appears.

If Brabec wins, is this late night talk show appearance worthy? Meaning is this as big a deal outside the industry?

Probably not. He'll get more mainstream coverage in countries like France, Souith Africa, Belgium, etc than he will get in the USA (or Canada). Especially at this time of year where the NFL playoffs dominate the mainstream sports stories.

A nearly 14 minute lead actually (13' 56'')

Quintanilla is going to push hard.

The final stage is a sprint. Anything can happen.

If Brabec wins it will be big motorsports news. Motorsports news isn't necessarily big in the mainstream US. When Chris Blais finished 3rd in 2007 it wasn't celebrated as much as it should have been, even amongst US motorsports media.

I sure hope Brabec wins.

I thought this was a much bigger highlight than the Alonso crash they kept showing over and over

Rough day for Skyler Howes. During stage 9, his swingarm pivot bolt broke and he had to keep stopping to kick it back in. During stage 11, it broke again, this time causing a crash. He did well to not lose more time than he did and still make it to the finish.
