Hypothetical question:

If you were Tomac's mechanic. how would you have prepared his bike for a mud race? What would you have done differently for the 2nd moto (after the 1st moto dnf)

Made it richer not leaner.

Automatic clutch

Softened the suspension a little more

Soften it so when his bike is 80+ pounds heavier with mud it can handle like even more of a pig?

I'd have tamed it down (timing/ECU), Reklused it and take the clutch lever off, installed the rear Pirelli that the JGR guys are running, added an oil tank for another 500cc of oil (on top of what KMC has already accomplished with the oil cooler), covered all the side openings on the airbox/make a water fence at the rear-fender-seat vent, run a vent hose at the bottom air-box drain, sealed up the electrical like the Star 250s, run VP MR Pro6 HT...and crossed my fingers until they didn't have any circulation...

This is all just-kidding...shit happens. AC's bike finished just fine. Other Kawi's finished. Eli's bad-luck stayed away during SX...and it showed up now.

C'est l'vie...

You still can't count Eli out.
He's THAT FAST.
He's that good.

Stayed inside the truck and said it's too muddy outside.
One of the many reasons I would be a terrible factory mechanic

Install some sort of “Roll off system” for the radiator guards.

Rekluse clutch, drain clutch master cylinder, overflow catch tank.

Maybe unearth a kdx200 and send him out on that.

Anodized gas cap and metal mulisha stickers. Save some weight by removing the exhaust packing

Not much you can do differently. Especially when it's as bad as it was there. You can always go farther with settings trying to save the motor or clutch but where do you stop. How far do you go. You never know till it blows. But teamgreen did mention a bigger oil cooler this is a good idea. Maybe plan for a mid moto clutch swap.

Changed the torque on the engine mount bolts.
Seriously all of these teams know how to set their bikes up for the mud. You think that this one time they just forgot? Motorcycles break racing in the mud.

The MX guys need to go see what desert and Enduro teams are doing. Oversized radiators, high pressure rad cap, ceramic coat the exhaust, cooling fan, radiator socks, soak the bike in mud-off, pack every nook and cranny with foam, stiffer suspension, particularly up front, hand guards, richen the mixture a touch, and let it rip!

You don't think they're doing that already? Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Husky and KTM have been racing motocross and offroad at the factory level all over the world since the 1960s. You don't think they acquired any of this knowledge in that time?

Auto clutch, take some compression out of it, and re-map it to control temps and detonation. Maybe a gearing change as well.
