....by smoking them on whatever their modern bike is, what would be the oldest bike you could do this with? Could you build something air cooled? I'm just thinking what bike would your friends absolutely laugh in your face if you tried to race - but you would be able to beat them if it was set up right. Some old dogs were just too bad to make good, but not all right?

It depends on your skill level compared to your friends. If you're quite a bit better then I'd say you could show up on a late 70s air cooled twin shocker and proceed to beat them. As long as you know how to ride the bike (those bikes feel a lot different than a modern bike) and you've got the suspension set up then you could surprise some people for sure.

You're a Moran for thinking you could ever beat your buddies without air forks and efi and multiple ignition maps and holeshot devices. God help you should you decide go choose something that doesn't take 4 spins of the crank. Wtf man.

In all honesty, I don't know, but it's clear that there's fast pros out there that can absolutely shred on mid 80's bikes, so I'd have to imagine that's about where the line would be. How many jumps on your local track?

A few years ago at a dad's exhibition race on the peewee track after the kids race day, one dad beat all the others on a ttr125. He was up against a number of 125 two strokes.

It would have to look bad though - you can't be showing up with a 88 KX250 and have everyone drooling because they think its a KX500 from the swoopy rear fender. You gotta have something that looks like it can't compete.

I do it all the time on my 05 YZ125. The old dudes love it, the younger kids just look at me and the bike with total confusion.

That's not even fair though, those and xr100s can have the motors so modded out it resembles nothing like the stock configuration. The motard guys love those bikes

I guess it depends how much faster than your buddies you are on comparable bikes. For me, I was 7-10 seconds a lap slower on an '89 YZ125 compared to a current 250F, depending on the track. On a '98 CR125 I'm somewhere in between. I have to think on an early-80's bike it would be ~15 secs a lap difference? Late 70's... 20 secs per lap?

Every situation is different, just throwing out my actuals and guesses.

The biggest disadvantage to an old bike is the handling.
Our 1989 RM250 is a plenty quick enough bike, its downfall is in the brakes and handling.
On a flat and simple track it would not be a lot slower than a modern bike, its jumpy, rough, technical tracks where the modern technology really shines and allows you to go faster than what the bikes of the 80's can.

My brother and me took our XR 250s, 90 & 92 models to our local practice track 3-4 weeks ago and didn't get passed all day and we passed a lot of new 250fs/ 450s and new 2strokes.... It's pretty funny seeing the double take looks as you barge up the inside of somebody.

I'm curious, what if you could transport the hurricane from 1978 and let him ride his works yamaha. How competitive could he be today, what class level could win at?

Guess it depends just how good your friends were and also how good the rider that was riding the old bike ultimately.
Sort of guessing but reckon a really good rider maybe able to win on as early as 1975 onwards...

Saw a youtube vid a while back of someone jumping an old 70's Bultaco/ CZ or something, was nuts and reckon he would have ripped it on a whole track also- think he was a pro rider in the past though- may have been John Dowd or someone.

Reckon he would do really good still.
I guess that is what makes the pros pros and how they go that quick seems hard to comprehend or emulate for the mere mortals (always did to me anyway!)

Yea- he flew on that thing. I bet though he would also be able to go pretty damn quick on a late 70's one even. ...

edit: Aah, just seen the vid above on an old aircooled - there we go.
Yes agreed, is all about the rider in many respects even more than the bike. Amazing how they are hitting those jumps at those speeds on those old dinosaurs.

I know, on Sunday a kid asked me what year it was. He looked even more confused after I told him. Maintenance son!

This has been discussed . Many feel he couldn't win in todays C class.

Bet if Magoo was still around and able to ride; then he would have been the ultimate man and rider to put the Old bike vs. New bike to the test !! The mind boggles at what he may have been able to do on a dinosaur and having the balls to do it!
