....by smoking them on whatever their modern bike is, what would be the oldest bike you could do this with? Could you build something air cooled? I'm just thinking what bike would your friends absolutely laugh in your face if you tried to race - but you would be able to beat them if it was set up right. Some old dogs were just too bad to make good, but not all right?
In all honesty, I don't know, but it's clear that there's fast pros out there that can absolutely shred on mid 80's bikes, so I'd have to imagine that's about where the line would be. How many jumps on your local track?

1979 KDX 400?
Check this old gem of a thread, especially the video...lol at the 77 RM125 killing it.

Every situation is different, just throwing out my actuals and guesses.
Our 1989 RM250 is a plenty quick enough bike, its downfall is in the brakes and handling.
On a flat and simple track it would not be a lot slower than a modern bike, its jumpy, rough, technical tracks where the modern technology really shines and allows you to go faster than what the bikes of the 80's can.
Pit Row
Sort of guessing but reckon a really good rider maybe able to win on as early as 1975 onwards...
Saw a youtube vid a while back of someone jumping an old 70's Bultaco/ CZ or something, was nuts and reckon he would have ripped it on a whole track also- think he was a pro rider in the past though- may have been John Dowd or someone.
I guess that is what makes the pros pros and how they go that quick seems hard to comprehend or emulate for the mere mortals (always did to me anyway!)
edit: Aah, just seen the vid above on an old aircooled - there we go.
Yes agreed, is all about the rider in many respects even more than the bike. Amazing how they are hitting those jumps at those speeds on those old dinosaurs.
