Curious thought, how long does a racer have to be out of the season to lose a national number?

ZachO commented in his MXoN interview (as seen on the Homepage) that he's considering #7.

As far as I'm aware the number 7 is currently an available number to those who are eligible for a single digit. I may be wrong but I believe James not getting any points this year means Zach-O or someone else could take it.

If Zach doesn't take it, the AMA will probably let James run it if he races next year.

It won't go anywhere unless Zach forces it.

Be interesting if he does!

I wouldn't touch the number. Too much drama surrounding it. I thought it was pretty ballsy for Webb to take the #2. I mean hell, look who he's following: McGrath and Villopoto. That's nothing, right?

Since James Stewart, formerly known as the fastest man on the planet, doesn't race anymore, I hope Zach takes his number for next year.

James will have to first race again before we can say the return of 259. As a Stewart fan I hope he just stays retired instead of coming back after being on the couch for so long. He really doesn't need anymore blows to his head.

Stew is never coming back, Osborne should take the 7 if he wants it.

I'm leaning towards this too. He should take it if he wants it.

But i feel like the 8 or 9 would suit him better.

I'd only take the #7 with a compensation contract from the clothing brandWinkWink

Personally, I'd take the 8 also.

No way the AMA would let him take #7. Say what you want, bla bla bla. If they think Stew will return they will hold it for him. I know the rules but they can change them at will.

I understand what you are saying, we have seen the AMA change rules at will, but why would they hold a number for a guy who has not finished a race in almost 2 years and only a couple in the last 3+ years? I really dont think they would hold it if Osborne wanted it, but I suspect he will take the 8.

i would think the AMA would do whatever it took to make JS happy. The second he comes back he will be the most popular rider, him and Reed. I could be wrong but I just can't see them letting him take that #7. Also since JS is a prior 450 champion. Couldn't he just pick the number again? I think Tomac didn't pick #3 until a few years after he won his 250 MX title.

Nope, won the 250 title in '13 and raced 450 class in '14 wearing the number 3.

Why would the AMA want to make him happy? What has JS7 done for them lately? Some guys like Mike Brown, John Dowd and Ryan Sipes worked pretty hard to make a few races and hang on to their number after the quit racing full time and people gave them shit about it, but you want the AMA to let James keep his for doing nothing? To be eligible or a single digit you have to be a National champion, which means 250 SX does not count because its a regional series. As soon as you win a National title, 250/450 outdoors or 450SX, you can pick any available single digit. If a rider does not score enough points in a season they lose their number. They already gave James an extra year because of his drug ban, then he came back and just barely got enough points. Remember, there was speculation that Webb might take the 7 if James did not score enough points? IF someone were to take 7 and James did came back (he isnt) he could pick another available single digit but he could not take away the number if someone has picked it.

All of this discussion is moot because James aint coming back, except maybe straight rhythm.

Stew should have slipped Herlings a couple of Benjamins to run the 7 yesterday and garner the points. Tongue

On another note...Feld should provide a rig and plane tickets for all 17 rounds for Reed and Stew next year. Let them build their own bikes and pay for their own crew. Give each one a small cut of the gate. 17 rounds of Mayfield and McGregor type marketing for the Sunset Tour. Of course it won't happen. Just a crazy old man's idea...Woohoo

Hey bro I never said I wanted the AMA to let him keep his number. But face the facts, they will because of who he is. You can't compare the guys your said to James, sorry. I'm not here on James behalf, but if you really think he does not have more pull that Zack your nuts! If James does return next year the #7 will be on his bike.
8/27/2017 2:36pm
That is true, you never said you wanted them to let him keep his number but you said the AMA would "want to make him happy" which is preposterous. Before the drug suspension and he terrible results following that, I would agree, since then? No way, they have no reason to help James, the sport has moved on and you should also.

But, he isnt returning, so like I said its a moot point.
8/27/2017 3:04pm
To be honest, I don't think hes coming back its like he just disappeared off the face of the Earth. Maybe you'll catch him down in Cuba but all that aside I think yes a racer can use his number now.

I don't understand why anyone would think there's a chance James will ever race professionally again. Look for him in +25 at Loretta's next year . Smile
