If Ricky never raced moto...

Edited Date/Time 4/9/2020 9:03pm
Bored in quarantine I ran the stats on CR22 for if RC never lined up against him, assuming he would win every time he came second to RC;
Wins:
2003
SX 13 wins - title
Mx 2 wins

2004
Sx 10 wins - title
Mx 7 wins - title

2005
SX 13 wins - title
Mx 3 wins

2006
SX 9 wins - title
Mx 3 wins

After RC
Mx 10 wins - 1 title
SX 29 wins - 1 title

Total:
SX: 73 wins 5 titles
1st all time wins
2nd all time titles

MX: 25 wins 2 titles
3rd all time wins

Crazy to imagine how differently we would look at Chad if there was no RC..
(Yea yea I get it, if my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.. just some fun bench racing to relieve my cabin fever)

AND, Chad Reed often beat 3rd place by 25 seconds or more. He never quit training to be the best. I didn't like Chad in 2002 when he whined, " I should be racing the 250cc class". He WAS, except he was racing a 250cc in the 125cc class. Chad Reed certainly earned my respect. Love to have a beer with him sometime, it'll be a shame when he's done.

Crazy... By the way he could easily be a 5 time champ in SX. He missed out on 3 titles by losing it in Vegas by only a handful of points (2 times 4 points, 1 time 2 points)

Keep in mind though that if RC never raced SX then McGrath would have about 8 more wins and an 8th title in 2001.

This is a fun one. James would have had some more wins and titles as well.

I often like to think about the people who DIDNT race but may have been a goat in this world of what-ifs. Some kid who won lorettas and his parents ran out of money or what have you

Cool stats! You should reverse them and see how many more wins RC would have if CR22 never raced.

Think KW and DV would have quite a few also.

Interesting. If McGrath never raced then our supercross champions would be:

1993: Kiedrowski
1994: LaRocco
1995: Ward
1996: Emig
1998: Lusk
1999: Lusk
2000: Vuillemin

This is what I always say when people say things like, "Such a deep field!" or, "Wow so many champions on the line!". People confuse a deep field with no dominant rider often. If not for RC and McGrath, we are talking about how insanely competitive SX and MX was for nearly 20 years.

I hear your point but I was watching a few old SX’s the other day and I totally believe our 10-20th place riders now have more credentials, and team support than back in some of the past time periods.

We have all these guys with regional wins or championships helping make the field deeper.

Maybe not so much without RC. As you can see in the stats above, Chad would have easily won all those championships (MC style) till JS7 came into the 450 class for SX.

I didn't look up individual race wins, but Windham would have 4 outdoor titles sans RC.
I always think of Windham first when I think of guys who could have been all-time greats if not for RC. I hadn't thought about Reed but maybe that's because he has two SX championships and an outdoor MX title; he doesn't seem to have been "robbed" quite as much as K-Dub has.

Chad lost the following SX titles-

2011: Lost to RV by 4 points (338 vs 334)
2009: Lost to JS by 4 points (377 vs 373)
2006: Lost to RC (and tied with JS) by 2 points (338 vs 336)
2003: Lost to RC by 7 points (367 vs 360)

It's crazy how close he was in those four seasons without coming out on top.

Ricky elevated everyone's game. You have to look at it that way as well. These guys may never been as good as they were or finished where they did had they not been chasing one of the greatest racers ever to exist.

These "What if" threads are cool. It really makes one put things in perspective. Keep up the good work boys. More threads like this guys. Especially during the lock down.

He was right, he should have been in the 250 class. He was eager to race RC. Imagine that.

If he raised everyone’s games, then they would’ve finished where they did.Wink

I thought it was like if he didn't race moto, what would he have done? Like boy band member, office worker, cop, etc.
Baseball maybe? Or quads haha

I always wondered if the reason why Reed hasn’t retired earlier is because of these near miss championships also also the fact he never worked with Alcon. I think a combo of never getting burnt out plus also taking off a few motocross seasons early on along with those missed opportunities has led him to keep racing. Which I enjoy though because I’m a big fan.
