In light of RV's departure from the ranks, this might be Mike's best shot at an elusive AMA National Championship. Anyone who remembers how fast he was that season before the get-off at Red Bud a few years ago knows that Mike has the speed to win the AMA title. He was the only rider who could keep Stewart in sight. I would not be surprised to see MotoConcepts' plans change if Mike does well at Glen Helen...

Alessi wasn't even top 5 in points last year.

He does have speed for outdoors, but 2012 Would have been a better chance that 14 I think.

That ship has sailed. With RV out its everyone's best chance for a title. Alessi's best chance is Canada.

I'd say he had the speed. Not has. He's solid outdoors no doubt but he's won one 450 moto and moto two was yarded by 20-25 seconds by RD.

Even with RV1 out Alessi still doesn't have much chance of winning. He'd still need to go through JS7, KR94, RD5, JB51, etc, etc, etc.

I would like to see him stay and race the nationals but he doesn't have much chance of winning the championship.

2009 was his best shot, everything since has been trying to make up for that missed opportunity. Either way, USA or Canada, I hope he does well.

I hope I'm wrong kinda like how I predicted Reed wouldn't be fast this year. But I don't think he is going to be a threat.

We raced against the Alessi's for a few years. They had more Honda support than Barcia did, although Barcia was younger and had a good deal too. You wouldn't believe their pit, with palm trees and lots of bikes and Honda guys everywhere. Even a place where you could play video games. It was a big rig like the pro's have, for amateur racing. But that was 10 years ago. There has always been controversy around the Alessi's. DQ'd at Loretta's when we were there in the quarantine area for not having the airbox screen in the stock class. He was very fast, but I don't think it has worked out well for them. Mike can holeshot and hang on a few laps. After that he cant keep up. Training maybe, I don't know, but he fades fast. More probable, a lack of funds to hire the trainers that he needs. Unfortunate, but I think his best days are in the past. Maybe he can do better in Canada, but I don't think he'll get a title there, and it won't make a difference for any sponsorship hopes here in SX or MX. You can't win a title without huge support, and there are younger guys coming up that are getting it. He's past his days to shine. Their dreams in the MX/SX world just didn't work out, like so many others. It's sad after dedicating your whole life to it. But reality has to set in sooner or later, better sooner, and prepare for the rest of your life.

Let's see....Alessi beat all factory riders other than Dungey in the year when he finished 2nd overall without any factory support. That's impressive. Alessi had a good sx season and mx is his strength. I don't believe Hill has a chance to beat Alessi even on a factory prepped bike. Hill has his own injuries to deal with and he hasn't been an outdoor threat in awhile. He's incredibly fast but I think his younger brother has a little more natural talent.

All the factory riders.... Ok, some. but calm down, just a little bit.

I do think Mike would beat Hill but people are getting ahead of themselves saying he'll contend for the title just cause RV is out.

Mike is fast. Mike can snag incredible holies and lead for a few laps. I think Mike has the same speed he showed a couple years ago...but has not come up to the speed that the guys up front can attain and maintain throughout the race NOW. The bar has been raised by RV, JS7, Reed & Dungey as to how fast you have to be from gate drop to the checkers in order to podium...much less win. I don't doubt MA can beat them to the first turn, and lead a lap or two...but I believe he'll fade when the others are getting their second wind.

Even in Canada, he'll have to dig deep to win.

I think if Mike had factory suspension he would do quite a bit better, he fights the bike at the end of races to much. The fact that he can do as good as he does on a machine that is no doubt good, but not great is rather impressive, he was very fast in outdoors in 2008 and 09 with that factory suspension on the Suzuki.

The bike definitely looks better this year tho, Byrner has obviously helped with setup.

I don't believe Mike is making the decisions.

That's the sad part.

Has he paid his fine for the Nats? He needs to cancel Canada if he can. Why wouldn't it be his decision? What is it that's not being told?

Give Alessi limited factory support like an efi module and access to tire compounds and he could run up with the factory bikes. It's not going to happen.
