I broke her in at Albany MX last night and she's sweet!! I find it amazing how a fresh 2006 aka '21 can still be so good. I rode it back to back with my '21 Kx250f. I actually like them both, but the 2 stroke just seems to skip over the breaker bumps effortlessly while the 4 stroke feels like it transfers more of the bumps to my body.
Also, for the life of me I can't seem to locate a 9oz flywheel weight or an exhaust system. Preferably a Pro Circuit. Does anyone know of any available? Especially the flywheel weight.

My son and I chatting about how much we love our 2 strokes Wink

Nice! But ride it back-to-back with a 2006 and you will see that it is heavily evolved since then.

Damn, I just sold an Apex head & GYTR FWW for one of these. That package with a STIC Metering block made the power like a 2-stroke 450. So much more predictable & linear........

The most effective package I bolted onto my YZ250 was FMF Factory Fatty, Pro Circuit shorty, V-Force reeds and 110 leaded fuel. That's before Slipdog ported it and head-modded it into an uncontrollable beast from hell's deepest pit.

They are pretty freaking fun if you grew up on a smoker. Both bikes would ideal.....if one goes down you will have the backup.

With which head insert?

I’ve been a YZ250 fan for a long time, just can’t ever find a two stroke that makes me as happy. I thought the Apex head was just some internet hype, but after buying one, I consider it a must have. All three domes have completely different personalities.

I have a GYTR 9 Oz FWW that came off my sons 250X. If interested, shoot me a PM.

I hope to. It depends on how crazy my work schedule gets next week. Have you been to Pats Acres yet? I want to give it a shot soon. That dirt looks good. Track looks ratty but if the ruts are good I'm in!

I have been to Pat's Acres one time this year about a month ago, and it was a mud fest (I rode anyways to get the experience) but it was 8-12 " of mud so if you wanted "ruts" you got them lol. Otherwise I can see the track being fun with some doubles, tables, and small elevation changes on the track. I do owe it to go back and ride when it's actually rideable. Let me know if you decide to head that way as well. I'm going to try for sure to be at Albany on Wednesday.

If you're gonna make the drive to Pat's might as well hit the RTF instead. I guarantee better jumps. Still working on getting the ruts perfect though.......In all seriousness some friends who live near Pats went a couple weeks ago. Didn't even unload before heading up our way. New layout is pretty sketchy was the word...

Haha. Three down votes from people who insist their 2006 is the exact same bike as the 2021.

Put a re-style plastic kit, blue rims, and an oversized front brake rotor on and your 06 is now a 21. However with that said NOTHING rides like a showroom fresh machine. Congrats OP on the new bike. That's how you properly speak with your wallet.

I'm guessing you do NOT have a 17+ YZ250, nor have ridden one back-to-back with earlier years. The frame change in 17 is very noticeable, but not by looking at it, and Yamaha did not make a statement about it, thus peoples holy grail (MXA) has never mentioned as well.

Tell us more… 🤔 (I have an ‘18 BTW, Fatty with a shorty, Boyesen Rad valve and Enzo re-valve/re-sprung for 185lb).

Frame change actually came in 2016. Slightly slacker head angle so that they could share the platform with the newly released YZ250X off-road model. I find it strange that Yamaha swept the changes under the rug and never mentioned them. And yes, I have owned both and honestly cannot tell a difference. Although never ridden them back to back. The YZ250 is not what I would call a heavily evolved platform, the engine has seen no technical changes since 2003 and Yamaha does just enough to keep it in production.

Great to see OP. I just moved back to Oregon this month. I’m actually right in Canby so less than ten minutes from Pat’s Acres. I have an ‘06 YZ I’m trying to decide what to do with currently. I’ll probably see you around one of these days.

I have a 21 KX 250 as well and love it. But I was wanting a 2 stroke as a second bike to play on. I bought this well taken care of 19 KTM 150 with low hours from the original owner . Put my graphics on and now it's ready to ride. Looking forward to spinning some laps on it.
