My dad went to the Yamaha shop to buy me a YZ 60 in 1982 and the salesman said. "Your son is 8, never raced, and has only ridden a Honda QA 50?". "You don't want the YZ, get him the MX 80".

I was pissed when dad brought home an MX 80, but the salesman was right. You should start off on a 250f...

I drew a picture in the 2nd grade of me riding it with Bob Hannah on a YZ 465 that my mom still has laminated in a scrapbook somewhere. Good times!

Slightly off topic... What ever happened to that dude who bought his first mx bike. He came off a R1 and bought a 450 but who kept posting about 450s not being scary. Don't hear anything from him anymore. Odd.

Don’t listen to these idiots. Your instincts are right. Dump that 450 and get a 250F. Problem solved. It’s a very dangerous sport.

Turn that throttle and hold on!

I’d go with a 250f for sure. I go back and forth and the 250f is way easier to ride and more forgiving. The more seat time you get the more comfortable you’ll get

Went with a leftover WR450F when i got back into riding in early 2017.
Kept it less than a season. Too much power and wore me out way to fast.
Sold it for a huge loss, but was able to get a current model year 250F for about the same price i sold my 450 for with 7 hrs on it. Not a single scratch or sign that it had been ridden.
Way better and enjoyed riding it much more, and then after a season sold that and bought a 300 2T. Perfect bike for the last 2 years. Zero complaints and doesn't tire me out at all. Just makes everything easy.

Just be careful, growing up desert riding I know of two guys that bought to 500 and 490 race bikes with no experience riding in the dirt. The guy with the 500 almost died colliding with another rider and the guy with the 490 went off an embankment and was paralyzed. Just telling someone to learn how to use the throttle is ignorant.

Never owned a Dirtbike before, rode them a handful of times throughout my life. Owned street bikes and harleys for years until I got married and had kids. I have never been to the desert to go camping and ride bikes but always have wanted to. Therefore I bought my youngest daughter a 50 quad my wife a quad and myself a 2020 CRF450R. The 450 is where I fucked up lol. I have never rode anything that fast in my life!! I just bought it yesterday ripped it around my block 2-3 times and I’m having total buyers remorse. The amount of power and speed it has is gnarly. I’m here to ask what should I do? I know I’m dumb I know I should have done more research instead of impulse buy. I have rode a 17 Yamaha 250 and didn’t think much of it and between my previous owned r6 and r1 and the fact I’m 6’1” 220lbs the 450 would have been perfect. But after the first ride around the block I think I’m gravely mistaken. Should I keep it and just try to ease into it? Should I cut my losses and sell the bike? Should I trade it in for something smaller? If I trade it will I lose my ass even more rather than selling it? Any input as appreciated.... and I again I realize I’m a dumbass for not thinking about this stuff before hand just asking for advice to minimize damage to myself lol
Just don’t twist the throttle so hard! It’s only as scary as you make it.

All the control is in your right wrist, it’s just that simple. Keep the left fingers on the clutch.

Sell it. Whatever you lose you'll save in hospital Bill's. I've seen so many new riders get weeded on 450s. It is not a beginner bike.

Trust your gut and get rid of it. It will ruin the riding experience for you and your family. 250f is perfect for you

I will never understand people telling beginner riders that they're too heavy for a 250f. They aren't trying to qualify for a national, a 250f with a 350lb rider will still do all the jumps and pull him around fine. They're as much power as any average person needs. Just sometimes it's fun to have more if you're prepared for it. Where's the guy who just posted videos of him ripping an RM144 around at over 300 lbs, still doing all the jumps?

I remember when I first started riding, was ready to graduate off of my XR80, and my dad threw me on my brother's CR250 with a bald rear tire, and it scared the living shit out of me, couldn't figure out why anyone would ever need that much power. A 125 was a lot for me to get used to at that point. Getting somebody on a bike they aren't ready for can end badly if it doesn't scare them off first.

"For years there were always a several "like new kx/cr 500, just needs a rear fender" for sale in cycle trader and the local paper."

I bought a few of those. Great deals.
