Only $10 for all 2024 SX, MX, and SMX series (regularly $30).
Assuming they actually produced more than the 400 units required for homologation in years past, I'm interested to see if having a Husky "RE" cannibalizes sales and leaves a lot more FE's sitting on dealer floors or if KTM will scale back production numbers of the orange bikes so that supply does not far outpace demand.
No Neken clamps
No Akro pipe and silencer
It seems like they trimmed some high end, big ticket items off... but I doubt it will effect MSRP
The Shop
What do you think?
BTW. I have one of each colour, not KTM hater by any means but I can't help but wonder, where exactly is the KTM 3600USD better than the RMZ.
There has never been a FE with Akrapovic pipe, only the silencer. And the first gen of the FE bikes have always had the stock pipe and silencer. Go and look at every first gen FE bike(2012&2015). We will see the Akrapovic silencer on the 2019 FE bike(if they make one).
KTM could probably do something like a Ducati Panigale R or Yamaha R1M. Beefed up suspension, carbon fiber, different electronics etc. But i don't know if a MX bike like that would sell, i think they are fairly happy with the FE system that they have at the moment. The FE bikes have been "only" 1k more expensive than the normal models, i think it's relatively easy to sell that to the consumers.
So let say $11,000 MSRP (?)
that's $11,715 with taxes
I've seen around here all dealers charge around $800 (at a minimum) in fees
We're already then at $12,715 OTD ... ouch!
I never considered MX bikes as an investment. It's an expensive hobby period. But how the hell can we expect to expand the local riders base with such prices? Because even if the FE is some kind of premium version, I don't think the standard 19 will be that much cheaper.
I love this bike, but it maybe just me, $12K toward a toy that depreciates like crazy?
Used bikes around here just don't sell, and when they do, the owner must be willing to take a massive hit.
The amount of $$ you need then to put toward a new bike is just ridiculous.
I see the same with cars/trucks, and now the Auto industry is all ?? because people don't replace their $60K truck every 3 years? I guess the bean counters think everybody is making $250K/y.
Pit Row
Just my two cents hereunder, from an average moto fan:
As much as I love smokers, I don't foresee a major comeback.
KTM/HVA will maintain them, more likely FI will expand to more models.
I know that Sherco is working on some MX models too but as much as I wish them success, it won't move the needle when looking at the big picture.
As long as Yamaha is making a buck, they'll build them. The other japs, I don't think so.
With the huge R&D and Production costs that's been put into 4 strokes technology, it does not make much sense for a business to re-invest in two strokes and scrap the thumpers.
KTM/HVA FI models have to increase the price tag on these models, and it won't go lower once expanded to other models (just look at what happened with EFI on thumpers).
It's just the nature of the beast.
These are not mass produced items. a DVD player was a fortune years ago but massive qties have driven the price tag to almost nothing.
Dirt bikes are another story.
I just hope that the industry is going to look more carefully at sales number, what kind and how many bikes are at local tracks and what the core of MX riders needs.
I am not saying the RMZ450 isn't an awesome bike once you get the balance set and suspension sent off to your favorite company for a revalve but you do get a lot more with a KTM/Husky for the money.
Want a real pounding? Get in to sports cars, then we can talk depreciation. If it costs us $3-5k to own a bike for a few years of dirt scootin fun, well that's money well spent in my book and cheap fun. There are plenty of WAY more expensive hobbies out there.
It DOESN'T have a bunch of the costlier parts that some of ya are bringing up...
