What does it take to get your 2013 AMA Supecross Lites license? My rider is 16 years old, very fast and dedicated, one of the top A riders in Texas and a Multi-time champ in the Pro class in TORN (Texas Off-road Nationals). We are fortunate enough to finally get noticed and I am wondering what we have to do to get to Arlington or Houston this year aboard a 250f? Any info would be awesome! Thank you

Has he ridden supercross before? If not, trying to get him into any east coast races this year is a bit optimistic. Its not something to rush into.

We did plan on doing a few of the Arenacross rounds. He has ridden supercross and arenacross before, never raced it. He was scouted by a team, tried out and they denied him help because he did not already have his license. I appreciate all the replies!

do you want to be competitive or just ride around the track, you need confidence to line up friday to qualify for SX you get that from winning.
if he has zero indoor pro races under his belt, AX is the minor leagues of indoor pro racing.

i am just stating rules, not opinions, i agree with yours
a full season of AX Pro, will do wonders for your tech,
endurance, and mind set. SX is a freak show, no matter
how cookie cutter and or semmingly doable it is.

Curious to hear who the rider is and which team denied him. Some of the faster guys that race the TORN series are John Short, Caleb Ramsay, and Cameron Ishmael (not in any particular order). If I recall correctly, John Short is young enough to fit the bill and he was blazing fast. One of the other two was battling with Demuth when the series went to Freestone but lost all of their ground on the motocross track. They came over the wall together and it was quite a spectacle to see.

As for being able to quialfiy with the big boys, it's tough to say how competition and riding skill transfer from hare scrambles to SX and MX. Understandable you want your boy to be able to live a dream and pursue a racing career but it is such a long shot to make it to even the top 20 and that's about the break even point. I hate to discourage anyone from following their dream but whatever you do, push your kid to do well in school and go to college. You'll be doing both of yall a huge favor.

Good luck to you and your boy.

The night the lights went out!

I was rolling triples half way through the main event while Jeff Alessi was still pooping in his diapers. Tongue

No, I am not Rusty Potter's father. This rider is not my son either, he is a good buddy of mine. When he ran into personal issues I stepped up and am now his mechanic/coach. Iwreckalot, I know all 3 of the riders you stated. John Short actually got picked up by a team out of Cleburne I use to ride for, very solid rider and kid all the way around. The rider I'm talking about has been out of the Off-road scene for about a year now.

Go run some AX races , you can hit Tulsa, Little rock, Witchita, Cedar Park TX, KC and even Denver , Dont think you will have time to make the Dallas SX in Feb but Houston is in April so it is possible. They call it the Ricky Carmichael road to supercross for a reason. There is no way the AMA will give him a license for the SX series just because he's local fast. He needs to race some AX rounds. Riding a SX or AX track is nothing you have to do some racing on them first.

I'm not too sure about a Supercross license, but I got my M1 motorcycle license at the DMV. Did it during my lunch hour and everything.

Thanks GuyB. For those not wanting to go to the rulebook. Here it is.

1. Be at least 16yrs. old at time of application.
2. Provide documentation that you've done ImPACT Concussion Management Testing
3. Meet one of two following criteria

A - Qualify through AMA Arenacross "Road to Supercross"
1. Earn 35pts. in Arenacross Class in 2011, 2012, or 2013.
2. Earn 60pts. in Arenacross Lites Class.
3. Finish top 10 in the AMA Amateur Arenacross World finals in 2011 or 2012 in the expert main event class.
4. Earn 1 Road to Supercross point in three separate Arenacross Class events.

B - Qualify through other programs

1. Earn 75pts. in the AMA Pro/Am Motocross Series.
2. Finish top 15 in 250A, 450A or Pro Sport Classes at Loretta's in 2011 or 2012.
3. Qualified into the evening program at least once in 450SX or 250SX 2009 through 2011.
4. Qualified in the top 40 in at least one round of AMA Pro Motocross in the 250MX or 450MX class in 2011 or 2012.

Well it's nice to know I have two of the criteria covered (age and the fact I could get an ImPACT test). Ha.

I thought I read the Road to Supercross did not apply until 2014? So how does this translate to a Pro who ran MX Nationals in 2012 that never qualified for the show..?

My interpitation of these rules are you still have to run AX to qualify..

The 2013 Rulebook says these are the guidelines for a 250SX license for 2013 or 2014. It also gives guidelines for changes for 2015. It is funny though, I thought these rules didn't apply until later as well.
