It's no mystery that you have to be in great shape to moto. Let's face it, training off the bike is the hardest thing to do because it's just plain old hard work. It takes a lot of discipline to keep doing the workouts week after week. So it only makes sense that you would want all the hard work to pay off. In this case make you a better rider. Not just a little better but a lot better. I've spent over 30 years with this goal in mind. Not only on myself but for many other pro riders, such as: McGrath, Windham, Lusk, Dowd, Fonseca, Roncada, Jesseman and Villopoto. All these riders combined have won 27 AMA Pro Championships. I'm still doing that, now training 28 riders at The Club MX Training Facility in SC, including Geico Honda rider Zach Osborn.
You have to know how to put the workouts together into circuits that use aerobic and anaerobic exercises. You have to know what's enough without being too much, how to balance your hard and easy days and so much more.
I've been addicted to this type of training since I was 18 and still am today at 59. Ask anyone who knows me, I'm still training 6 days a week. Why, because I just don't feel right if I don't. That's the only reason that makes any sense to me. But I do know when I ride the bike I don't get tired and can still go fast for my age. I wanted to challenge myself in 2012 so I raced the Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Finals and won all 3 motos of the 50 Masters Class.
I've carefully put all this training for motos info together in an easy to follow 90 minute format DVD or Stream called The MX Conditioning 2 DVD which comes with a PDF Training and Nutrition Manual. https://gsmxs.com/shop/motocross-conditioning-2/ Don't waste your time and energy doing all that hard training that's not going to be 100% efficient at making you a better rider. Learn from my experience, experience that's long (over 30 years) and is proven with National Championships.
Get all the facts for MX sports specific training methods... order the DVD that includes a full sized 43 page Training and Nutrition PDF Manual. Enter this code until April 1st and receive 10% off: winterdvds2014

Try the exact same workout while doing this, and while not. Record your level of soreness for the next 1-3 days. I gurantee it will help you a ton.
Just research post workout nutrition... most people do not understand how beneficial it is to replenish themselves directly following a workout. If you workout and then do not consume anything within 45 minutes, you legitimately wasted your time as far as gains go. You will work on your cardio, but your muscles will not reap the benefits they would if you ate properly.
Trigger point foam roller does wonders also. hurts but helps a lot.
Gary is in better condition than I am (based on the photos he attached) so might not agree, but the past couple years (58/59) I am just tired all the time. More than I've been in the previous 5 years and I've not changed or added anything to my life that would account for it….other than being older. So that is what I'm blaming.
Still I'll keep on trying. The goal is to get the most heart beats in. Eh?
I'm in no way saying that's what is wrong, but low T has ruined many peoples lives younger than you... And the numbers decline as you age. All the commercials might make it sound like BS, but in reality, it's just so common that there are a ton of companies out there makin big bucks on it cause males are so low these days.
Get a blood test done and have them check overall testosterone, free testosterone, estrogen, and your cortisol levels. Cortisol is the stress hormone. Too much of it makes you tired, low energy, etc.
If you chose to use a traditional low carb protein shake, add some sugar or drink a mouth full of honey.
Sugar is bad, but it is GOOD immediately following a workout (the sooner the better).
Your body is constantly in recovery mode, never in a relaxed state. That will take its top on your central nervous system, and immune system.
I was lifting/ cardio 6 days a week with very little gains. I got frustrated and now cut back to 4 days lifting, 5 cardio and I've noticed I feel a whole lot better.
By no means do I have the credentials of Gary, but I'm really into fitness and used to live with a professional body builder/ extreme sports junkie who was going to school for physical therapy. I learned a lot from him and with my own research.
To each their own, so i urge you guys to research from every angle. The internet is your beat friend! Body building.com has a great forum about all topics fitness, you can learn a lot (and read plenty of stupid shit too) there...
Thanks for the extra info. I'll check it out. And the bodybuilding.com forum. Fortunately there aren't any stupid things said on Vital, so a little from that forum won't hurt.
Pit Row
I`m doing it everyday only because I like it and if I`m not in a gym every morning at 8.00 am- something`s not right.
Thanks Gary.
Curious to try the BCAA/L - Glutamine
I've never tried Glutamine but always heard good things, I'm getting close to splashing out.
As far as squat bar position, pads are not good! They move the position of the bar relative to your centreline so adjust the dynamic of the movement, not a good thing. Take the pad off, lower the weight and get used to it. It seems to take about 2-3 weeks to become comfortable without the pad. I prefer low bar squats which are more comfortable and I feel more throughout my body. Again, it took me about 3 weeks to get comfortable changing style.
