How much different is a 350f vs 250f?

I'm in the market for a new bike and wondering between the two. I used to ride pro but that was ages ago, and I am 52 now...ugh. So my focus at this stage in life is on which bike will put the biggest smile on my face. I may race but mainly will doing practice motos at the track. I also love free riding and blasting around through the trails. So far the 2019 YZF 250 sounds like a great bike. I was just wondering if the 350F is almost the same in weight but has way more engine, it would be like riding a really hopped 250? If that is the case, I'm leaning more to a 350F. Seems like an easy choice unless the 250 feels way lighter on the track?

You guys on 350's feel quite a bit less torque compared to a 450? One of the reason's I stepped off the 450's was for that exact reason and went to the 250 2 stroke. Big difference between those two bikes , and was wondering where you guys may think the 350 lands between them?

I went from a 2016 Yamaha YZ250F to a 2018 Husky FC350 and couldn't be happier. Jeffro, I was tired of holding on to a 450 but the 250 left me lacking a bit, and I found the sweet spot with the Husky-Now I need to follow your lead with a Husky 125 and 250 for shits and giggles. But to the OP I would strongly suggest going to the 350. Powerband is a mile long and stronger than a 250F without putting the fear of God into you like a 450. Love this bike.

The 350 is more big bore than small, but without the "oh shit" moments of a 450. The 350 is 450 fast without biting you the second you relax.

I don’t think I could be happier on a bike than I am with the 350f. It has way more manageable torque for me than the 450, but has more “umph” than the 250f.

I’ve said this before, but I’ve ridden my KTM and a Husky back to back and I would choose the Husky. The KTM is more aggressive, but I’m not an aggressive rider

The YZ250 is really good and on the 2019 using the “TP” map its very impressive compared to the 350. When test riding it, I remember questioning that maybe the power rivals my 350. A positive on the Yamaha is the WiFi tuning app and the suspension is incredible.

I own a 19 350 and love the bike, but right away I put my Cone valve forks on it. I really don’t like the AER air forks. It’s does have more bottom and more over rev. I don’t really like the top end of the YZ, but the 19 is better then in the past.

The 250 feels lighter on the track, I’d think it’s best if you can take a few laps on both. The cockpits feel pretty different so that could be the deciding factor. Or What is the price difference between the 2?

Yeah? Man , maybe I just had a bad experience on the 18' KTM 350 I rode at Glen Helen. I was in terrible condition due to an injury and the track was dry and beat up at the end of the day. My buddy that owned it also had the hot ignition setup on it , and the damn thing felt every bit as fast as any 450 I've ever ridden. I'd love to try a Husky 350 on some good NW dirt , especially now that I'm healthy. Thanks Bents.

350 is a 450 power delivery flipped on its head too. It builds and builds and builds whereas a 450 is right NOW and then tapers off and goes flat. 350 starts smooth and just picks up from there as you hold it on.

In theory the 350 is the perfect bike. Weight and chuckability of a 250 with a top end pull that is right there with a 450. Doesn't tire you out with too much power, but if you rev it, it'll clear almost any jump.

However, if you like to keep the RPM's low and grunt around the track, a 350 results in an uninspiring bike that never quite seems like enough. If you like to wring a bike's neck 125 style, you better be a damn good rider on a 350, as you're going be going very, very fast. So the other side of the porridge is there's not enough torque and it's too fast to simply go WFO everywhere.

Last summer my local dealer give me a 18 350sxf for a few races last year. I have rode 450’s for the last 10 years and I absolutely loved the 350. The easiest way I could describe it was 250f power with 450 gearing. What I mean by that is I found you had to rev it out similar as to what you would on a 250 but you could carry a gear longer as if you were riding a 450.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I am a 125 guy at heart. I used to love revving the snot out of those things. At least the ones I had that pulled really hard up top. That being said I am 185 lb and want something faster than a 125, and has a least some torque for when I feel lazy and just want to play ride on some high speed trails. I was considering a 450, but I am not a fan of short shifting and lugging a bike around. I got some good race results doing that on 500s, but it wasn't a lot for fun for me to ride like that.
The 350s really do sound like the real deal! Especially for someone who prefers to keep twisting than shifting.
Husky or KTM? Ugly orange or ugly side plates? lol I did see a KTM with flo yellow plastic that looked pretty sweet...

I’ve rode a 17 350sxf and fc350 back to back. The Husky felt a lot nicer. I personally think the 16-18 ktm’s are junk. I rode a 19 450sxf and thought it was really good though. I wouldn’t recommend a 16-18 ktm. The 350 is that perfect in between bike.

Would be nice if they had a RockStar edition for the 350 for 1k more like the 450. To add all those goodies after the fact will cost a lot more...Just looked at a local dealers website, they have an 18 with Akrapovic Exhaust, Renthal bars and some blue ano bling...for $500 less than the 19 they have in stock...

Have you ridden a modern KTM/Husky 125 or 150? They go pretty well compared to older offerings. Can't go wrong with them from a purely fun standpoint.

Some other input:
I rode a 2016 YZ250F at a demo day. Power was very nice for a 250F, but it was kind of boring to ride.

Recently sold a '18 CRF450R. It was a great bike, but the power was a handful.

Recently bought a '19 KTM 450SXF. Havent been to the track yet, but initial impression is the weight difference is very noticeable and power is much more manageable.

My regular riding buddy has a '17 350SXF that I've ridden many times. Down low is very similar to a 250F. Midrange and above is 450 level power. The '19 350 is supposed to have more low to mid, which sounds nice.

You said trails. 250f all the way. The new yz is great. Best 250f i have ridden. Moto would be different as the 250f you have to be on your game revving it tonthe moon to clear all the jumps. 350 would be better there. Problem in woods is both the 350 and 450 is unless you are an expert rider, you cant ride them hard.

I've had 250s and 350s, it's a big difference. The ktm 350 is lighter than the Yamaha 250 also. If you liked riding 125s you will like the 350. Remember when you think you need to let off and shift on a 360 don't. Just twist it harder. Not an easy bike for slower people to ride, sounds like you would figure it out fast.

Yeah...no I don't think the trails I like to ride are what people normally think of when they hear trails. Not the tight twisty technical stuff, this was 3rd gear sandy stuff. I was riding it like a motocross-er. A bit sketchy I guess, but fun! My biggest concern was actually getting lost...my sense of direction sucks!

I think the 350 feels more like a 250F on steroids than a 450.

It's pretty mellow off the bottom with good mid-range and a killer top end.

The Husky back to back with KTM feels less ridged. I’d suggest Husky if you’re an older guy who might ride off-road also.

KTM feels more aggressive and race ready, but harsh in chop. Crazy, but it’s surprising the difference you feel.

You might think about a 270. Derek Harris built me an SXf 270 and it dynos at 52 HP. I had a 350 prior and loved it, but this bike is even better, a little less rotating mass. Like others have said, in either case you need to rev these bikes for them to work. If you go w the 350 imo go to a 13 tooth front sprocket.

Sluggo77, I am a 125 guy at heart as well. I have an '18 150sx and a '19 350sx-f. They compliment each other very well. The 350 can be revved, lugged and everything inbetween if you play with gearing. I had a '17 450sx-f and it tires me out way more than the 350. No comparison. My first love is small bore bike for the agility. I could actually ride my 150 longer with out the "oh shit" moments. The 350 is even easier to ride without the heavy feel of the 450. It is the ultimate race/play/vet bike for 90% of riders. I was skeptical at first about the 350 but it is by far the best bike I have ever owned. Mine is bone stock with one tooth added to the rear sprocket (51t), and yes, my sprocket bolts are tight. Lol. I haven't ridden the Husky 350 but I couldn't be happier with my 350. It's inspiring to ride which is hard to say about most four strokes. The '19 350 is much better than the '16-18' and is snappier and makes the bike feel much lighter. It's a do-all bike. Go for it!!!

Btw, I have seen more than a fare share of '18-'19 valve guides break in the Yami 250f's. I'm not stirring the pot but it was enough to scare me away from the new Yami 250f. I rode both '18 and '19 Yamaha 250f's and the '19 350 engine isn't even in the same league. It's a 450 when you want it to be and a 250f at heart. My 150 is now my novelty bike that I ride a few times a year. I'm 195lbs, 5' 10" novice/intermediate. I've been riding over 30years and the 350 outs a smile on my face every time I ride it.

Recently sold my 10’ YZ250 for a 16’ 350SXF. BEST decidion i have ever made bike wise. I didnt like the 2t power because the power curve. The 350 you can roll for days on power and it doesnt beat you to death either after riding all day...
