The Shop
Colorado..1989 I had just joined the USAF and was in Colorado for over a year of Tech. training to become an F15 Avionics tech. Raced the Colorado State SX series put on by the SRAC (Sport Riders Association of Colorado). Back then it was a 5 or 6 race series with a couple rounds in Greely and others in Boulder, Casper, WY and Colorado Springs. Ricky Johnson even raced the Colorado Springs round as he was rehabbing his wrist injury at the Olympic Training Center there.
To this day the SRAC was by a long mile the best sanctioning body/promoter I've ever encountered. At least for the SX races they put on they split the day into 2 parts with beginners & slower classes in the morning and faster classes in the evening. This meant way less time waiting around and gave you the chance to pack up after your races and be back home by the early afternoon or to load up, change clothes and stick around to watch the faster guys if you desired. This also gave them the chance of offering a little less challenging track that was safer for the slower guys while giving them the chance to freshen up the track and increase its difficulty for the faster guys if they so desired. And finally.....get this.....they had clear class progression rules that they followed. If that meant getting bumped up mid-season then that's what it meant.
If you want a good laugh take a look at the short video from that series. As the description says....my goon level was off the charts...my riding ability was abysmal...and its a wonder I made it through the series without injuring myself or any of the other riders it seemed like I was taking out left and right.
