Had a cutting edge orthopedic surgeon that cut his teeth in Vietnam that did an outstanding job with two pins and a bunch of wire.
Had the pins out after 2 years. It won't straighten all the way, and has arthritis now, but considering the conversation we had to start I am pretty happy with it.
Did mess up my path to being a brick mason though.
I broke my leg in 1984 right where it meets the ankle and had a screw put in.
I had just gotten laid off from my job and was told i had insurance for 2 weeks. They were wrong. It ended at the end of my last pay period. So, because I had no insurance, we went over the bill with a fine tooth comb before I set up a payment plan for the $5k+ (1984 $). I know the screw itself cost $18.
It is still in there. At one time you could feel the head, but I guess the bone has grown around it over 36 years. It is slightly bigger than the other leg.
Never bothered me riding.
2 plates and 13 screws in left radius/ulna since 2009
My arm/wrist is very weak/painful in scenarios like front/lat raises in the gym, or opening jars.
My femur is pretty much good to go except on runs >10 miles. I think the left leg makes the most miniscule compensation over every step and after running many miles this adds up and throws out my back very badly and leaves me worthless for several days.
The Shop
I can’t imagine still packing this hardware around.
