If you think about, the mold tooling for the OEM style plastic has been around for over a decade now. Typically after 10-12 years the tooling is going to be fully depreciated and reaching its end of useful life (from an accounting/financial perspective).

This gives the company leverage to update and or build new tooling to introduce new designs when they were going to have to invest money into the original tooling in the first place to keep product quality where it needs to be. The cost of the tooling is amortized into the product cost based on a useful life of approximately 10 years.

As far as volume - very hard to say. But they did the math and determined they could still sell enough kits over the life of the new tool to justify the investment. Plastic mold tooling is very expensive so I was really surprised to see them provide an update to the KX line.
