This is Dick Lyons last weekend. He runs his age for his number every year.
Yep. He's 87. Blink Nicest guy you'll meet and pure badass.

The guy inspires me to work and train harder, just thought I'd share. Who's the oldest motocrosser you know ?

Edit: If you're wondering that's the Glen Helen main

Puts a smile on my face to see that! I hope I can walk when I'm 87 let alone throw my leg over a dirt bike.

We have a member at our private track who is in his early 70s. He still rides his yz250 a few times a month. When he comes to the track it's just like having another one of the buddies around. He still rips too.

87? That is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. As far as me personally I’m gonna do it until I physically can’t anymore. Then I’ll hire a shrink cause I’ll go insane.

Is Dick the same guy that rode a YZ125 about 15-17 years ago?

I remember a guy around 70 that rode a YZ125 at LACR on Saturday nights.

For me, I plan on riding/racing as long as I possibly can. I hope to still ride and race at 87!

Probably ? Do you remember what he looked like ? Here's a pic from a couple years ago. The old guys in the club named him Short Dick. He's named Dick and he's short, soo.... there ya go lol.

There were 9 guys in the 70 class last weekend. Dick was the only guy in the 80 plus class. Barry Simon who's 81 does most the races too but GH isn't his favorite, so he just hung out for the day. "I might ride I don't know, I'll put my gear on and ride around in practice and see how I feel" "I don't like the sand, and I don't like the hills. If I fall over I can't pick my bike up, if someone else picks my bike up I can't get back on it, Im 81 years old so fuck it who gives a shit" LOL If I never race again I'm still going to be a regular hanger outer at the OTMX races just to hang out with these dudes. Started at 4. 36 now. I'll probably never stop riding, but don't think I'll race past 50. I'm already hurting. Depends how many times I hit the ground. That's a hard thing to predict. My dad is 66 and still rides/races occasionally. He's more into restoring Bultaco's now.

As long as I can! I find that by staying in decent shape, I get more competitive the older I get.

In our desert racing series, we usually have 5-10 guys racing in the 70+ class.

And then there was this guy: Zoli Sr. was the poster child for running it hard and long. He was the leader in every age class, and rode through some astounding disabilities into his late 70's. Those hands, for example, would sometimes be duck-tapped to the bars if his grip was off on a day. And he used to deal with the attendant palm blisters by grinding aspirin into the holes. They don't make 'em like that anymore...

I can’t think of his name at the moment, but I think you are thinking of a different guy. He raced every Saturday night and you could catch him smoking cigarettes on the gate, before his race.
Sadly, he passed away a couple years ago. He was also a short guy… always talking shit with the little kids, definitely a character !

That is why I like racing with OTMX and OTHG Getting to ride with guys that are in their 60's, 70's and even 80's. Give me hope and makes me feel young at 54.

And for the record Mr. Lyons is a bad dude!!!!

I'll ride and race till I cant anymore.

I saw a guy here in the Houston area come pulling in to the track with some old bike on a trailer. Really old guy got out and took forever to get unloaded and gear on. He finally fired that bike up and took off really fast, went behind a berm where I couldn't see then I didnt hear the bike anymore. Kinda worried my buddy and I started walking over there and finally see him slowly pushing the bike back.

We walked over to give him a hand and he said when he took off the throttle stuck and he was lucky he killed it in time. Said he was done for the day. I pushed his bike back and we visited for a while. Turns out he was in his 70's and was an old ex pro. I cant remember his name though. Cool old dude, seemed like he didnt give a shit about anything. Told some stories then told us all about his bike with numerous custom parts on it. I can't remember what bike it was but we helped load it up and that thing must have weighed over 400 pounds. Wish I would have got to see the guy rip around the track.

If it wasnt for guys over 50, the sport would be dead.

I planned to ride till i was about 30.

That was 26 years ago.

Still going.

Ah man... That's a bummer. My pops and I were talking about him over the weekend and wondering if he was still around racing.

I think I I’m done racing at this point in my life, but I will continue to ride every weekend until I can’t get my leg over my seat.
When that day comes, I have no idea what my life will be like, I don’t really have any other hobbies, besides MTB’s and snow boarding.
At 56 years old, I feel like I can keep riding into my 70’s for sure. Most of my friends are in their 60’s and some in their 70’s as well !
