How do you pull 1 tear off without pulling all the others with it?

This is something that's been grinding my gears for years now. Go to pull a tear off & 9 times out of the 10 the rest will follow with it. I've got pairs of 100% & Airbrakes goggles, followed all the tips on youtube, put the bottom one on, don't crease it, lay the next one on & repeat but still manage to pull the lot.

What am I doing wrong?

Grabbing too close to the goggle. You can barely feel one tear off when wearing gloves.

Practice at home until you get it dialed.

Alternate the side you pull from ? It will at least save the very bottom one.

Tear Off 101:

Always put the first one on backwards. I epoxy another tear off tab on the RHS outrigger of my Airbrakes.

You'll always have at least one left.

Also, aftermarket tear offs are a little thinner and easier to miss pull.

Gonna be interesting to see how rolloffs develop when tearoffs are made illegal in the US. Rolloffs have been around for how long? and they still only work half the time for half the race.

Also saving dirty ones and putting a bunch of those on and practicing over every jump is always good for photos and your ego and might help your problem.

These look to be on the wrong way. Should be to the left, or at least that's the way I've always done it, so that the right hand is still on the bars for brake and/or throttle.

On the right hand side??

What happens when you have to pull a tearoff when your not in the air? Do you just slow down, pull a tear off, then resume your ride? What if your racing??

If they have a crease in them then no, I roll the one over, then the next one holds it in place.

I forgot to mention in my original post, do the genuine ones work better than aftermarket ones?

Ok, just making sure you are in fact rolling them over. My only suggestion is to practice grabbing further back. No need to grab right next to the goggle, the tear offs go pretty far back. Maybe practice grabbing the end in front of a mirror? Get that muscle memory down.

To everyone else, I stole that image off google. I don't have any tear offs ready to go right now. However I put them on the left side, no idea why someone would run them on the right.

I had the same problem, not quite as bad though.
I switched to roll offs.

Take your time with it I used to pull the lot off when I was racing as I found I was rushing to find time to pull them now I have learnt to really take my time and manage to just pull the one ! It's precision not speed, loosing 2 secs from pulling a tear off is much better than not being able to see !

This. If I can't rip one off on a jump and I'm having trouble seeing I'll slow down a little more in the next corner and make sure I pull it

Good advise here. I can see the end of the tear off out of the corner of my eye.

I actually have never had this problem, but I have not pulled it all the way off before.

Same here and also even when I am on a smooth part of the track.

If you are nervous about taking your hand off the bar for that long you may be not holding on to the bike with your legs tight enough.

But the new Scott Prospect System seems like it might be okay. I would never use them unless it was an actual mudder.

I also have at least 3 tear offs on even if it's a perfect sunny day.

Stop on the side of the track and pull off slowly OR quit hyperventilating and pulling them as you go thru the whoops

How can they ban tear offs on private property, or closed course competitions?

Just pay a couple local kids a few free dogs, a hat or a T shirt and free drinks all day to pick them up. Plus they get to watch for free.

Can't be that hard to rectify the problem. If they are too spoiled to do it, find some homeless dude. Guaranteed a full belly and a few beers and you are good to go.
