Hi, i have a ktm 2013 450sxf that I didn’t wash properly before getting work done to the engine which took 2 months, since having it back I have a part of the head which got honed out for a bigger piston which is way cleaner then the rest I currently have a broken hand and cannot ride so looking at scrubbing it right up, I have used autosol aluminium polish and a scouting pad to clean the swing arm up but not really keen on doing that to my motor. Does anyone else have an easier or better way without pulling the motor off the frame?

Pull motor out, plug all holes. Bring it to a shop who have a vapor blast machine and it will come out new

Simple green/ degreaser and a scotch brite pad, lots of elbow grease. Will be tough with a busted hand though

A dremel with wire wheel attachments in the tight areas and scotch brite for the bigger areas.

The best way to do it is to tear it down and have it vapor blasted. Heres a pic of my engine after i ran it through my vapor blaster.

I think you have to take the engine apart to a port blast. There’s potential to blast through a gasket if it was together.

X2. Before i built my blaster i thought i could do whole engines. You cant. Once you see how small the beads are you will realize you cant blast an assembled engine - or anything for that matter. The beads are probably .0005” in diameter.

Get a box of these:

I remove the motor from the frame, put it on a stand, plug all the holes, soak it in concentrated SImpleGreen, hose it off, then start scrubbing with Scotch-Brite. It will look brand new and you won't have to use any harsh chemicals or take the motor apart. Takes me about a hour to completely refresh a motor. I've worked on way worse than what you have.

You don't have to remove the motor from the frame, by the way. I would, however, remove the header and radiators/shrouds and tank.

Scotch-brite.

Unfortunately had to deal with this last year after A Day in the Dirt. It was pretty wet, but good! Unfortunately it rained and snowed at my house for almost a week straight and the bike had to sit. By the time I was able to wash it, there was corrosion on the frame and motor. Scotch-brite and elbow grease took care of it.

What are you using to plug the holes? I use exhaust plugs where the header comes out and don’t think paper towels would hold up in the smaller areas.

Whenever I used scotch brite pads on my engine or frame I’d always soak them in wd40 and they came out great

Soak it with WD40

Ride it

Repeat.

That clamp on the coolant hose looks like its cutting into the hose? Might just be the angle

Heres a tip for your frame i got from AC’s mechanic. Use steel wool instead of scotch brite. I use 00 steel wool with wd40 and it turns out great

whatever you do, stay away from acidic cleaners (simple green) and use a cutting oil or wd to polish then clean with a basic 7+pH detergent. I learned the hard way that acidic cleaners will really trash aluminum

Put baking soda in this Harbor freight tool. No need to remove motor.

You need to order you a bunch of cross buffing wheels. Attach them to your dremel or air. If you do it by hand, you’ll never get an even finish and you’ll always see the spots you can’t get. The only way to get every spot is blasting, cross buffing wheels come in second. You can still see some scoring from the buffing wheel, but does give you a nice even finish. Also making the drimmel do the hard work. I wouldn’t vapor blast your engine together. Needs to be torn down. I have a machine, the solution gets into everything, plus it wouldn’t be good for your bolts.

Various sized rubber plugs/stoppers. Home Depot and similar hardware stores have them. I have a bunch of different sizes that I've kept over the years. I have also used small rubber balloons before for the breather hose and water pump inlet/outlet.

Keep the spark plug in.

I usually stuff a paper towel in the exhaust and intake ports and cover with tape, if possible. You can usually get a ballon around the intake flange.
