They must have breathed a sign of relief when Deshaun Watson went down

Holy shit I never thought about that. Major risk since they made the playoffs and hosted several games in recent history.

Matthes said something a couple months ago that if Houston was in the playoff then Supercross would take a week off and they would move the Houston race to Easter weekend.

I mean it’s Houston, they might have made the playoffs had Watson not gotten hurt but I’m sure they were confident they wouldn’t have home field advantage in the playoffs lol

Ha! How many here have been to a race in the Astrodome? I did, in '81. Barnett won both nights, and David Bailey was on a Kawasaki.

I remember when I thought the Astrodome was huge. Now it looks tiny compared to NRG Stadium.

Oh, and you could probably say that Feld was betting against the Texans this season. Wink

I was there! Raced that weekend in the pee wee class. First time I ever saw Doug wheelie the entire track, plus the BMX trick show was cool too. Who was on that crew Guy? I was thinking Buff, Osborne, Haro? Had a blast that weekend!

I raced amateur day there in the early 90s. Bayle won that night, maybe 91 or 92.

Buff and R.L. for sure...probably Haro, too. I drove out there with them.

I think Hannah rode my PK Ripper the next day at the BMX race.

Went plenty of years in the 90's cheering McGrath, Emig, and Lusk onCoolCool

Remember one year they had these huge on off table tops, but the ends were really lipped up. They had some big singles between some of them. Man that was my favorite track of all time. They did so many different combos through that section. Was fun to watch.

I know there was a right hander right after but can’t remember the whoops. Wish I could find an old tv broadcast of that race! I think the lane with the rhythm was mirrored going opposite directions a lane over. Not 100% sure tho

Because it’s the Texans.

Glad I saw this thread. I was just wondering the same thing. Has there ever been a dilemma like this? Maybe with the Superbowl changing stadiums every year? How can they guarantee this doesn't happen?

Watched Kenny Roberts Sr. and Texan Terry Poovey. Race short track in 1975/76 era. Pitched sideways in the Dome! And worked the Bel-Ray oils booth prior to the races.

Super Bowl is easy to avoid, since the game is scheduled years in advance.

In the early 90's, the Astrodome was a common location early in the season.

In 1994, they came really close. Supercross was scheduled at the Astrodome on Jan 22, 1994. The week before, the Oilers were leading the Chiefs 21-20 in the fourth quarter and the Raiders were leading the Bills 23-22 in the fourth quarter. If the Oilers and Raiders won, they would play the AFC Championship game on Jan 23, 1994.

But both teams blew their leads in the fourth quarter, so Kansas City played at Buffalo instead.

Side note....How cool is it to make everyone drive halfway across the country and then right back to where they started from? You would think they would make a lap around the country like a band tour. This is a traveling circus after all.

My money was on Feld.
All Feld does is call up and ask if the stadium is open on a particular weekend. The city of Houston (or whoever manages the stadium) is the one who had such little faith in the Texans that they thought it would be OK to schedule a race during the playoffs. Sounds like something San Diego would do...
