Any hate towards the new YZ125 astounds me. We could be witnessing a "watershed moment" in two stroke development by seeing Yamaha redesign the 125 engine, and actually listening to what consumers are asking for.
Just imagine if Star Yamaha put one of its hotshot young riders on it for the remainder of the Nationals to promote it. The kid would turn into a cult hero, and be one of the most popular riders on the track.
Maybe it would open some eyes for the rest of the manufacturers, who have been ignoring the resurgence in the popularity of the 125 class, and two strokes in general.
Hey, a guy can dream, right?
Just the fact that Yamaha is keeping these bikes not only available, but making them current, is HUGE.
Eli Tomac looked pretty fast on that KX250 smoker in that commercial....maybe we'll see that big #3 on a new blue YZ250 soon. 👍

Star is all about winning, I don’t think promoting a 125 would be on their agenda. Idk how much the 2022 puts out, but the 2021 was probably down around 7 HP compared to the stock 250f in a class where horsepower is king

But we can dream

Bret Metcalfe did great on one in 2005, I’m sure some kid 15 years later will be really successful against the current 250s

YZ250 not YZ125, should be competing against 250f’s. Until that’s allowed, forget about it.

When I was a kid, all the fast local guys raced 125A and 250A. Then there was 125B, and sometimes 125C was so big they had to split it up...Now, it seems to mostly be classified by age, with mixed displacements.

Lol I had a couple times not making the "125C Main" at the local level. Good times. But yes, it is certainly different now. That being said, I feel like there are still a lot of 2strokes at the tracks, if not racing then practice nights. If I take my 125, it's almost guaranteed that I see 5 more YZ125s there.

Star would never park their 250F to throw a kid of a 125. I like the idea though. What would be a more realistic idea is if the Nationals could expand on the 125 Allstars a bit more, if that comes back next year. That seemed to be getting really popular. Or if the AMA in general finds a way to use 125's properly, sorta like the EMX Series.

I get what you're sayin' though, let Star crank out a badass YZ125 and put a fast new kid on it to show the development / improvement steps Yamaha has taken. Maybe in the 125 All Star races? Are those races a thing yet?

Logan best is on a yz125 in the Yamaha amateur program. Maybe he would do a 125 all stars race.

This should’ve happened a long time ago. And make that the premier class. 450’s are open, then there’s room for a 125 support class

Some sort of 125 support class during "intermission" at the Nationals would be awesome. Run local qualifiers for the chance to race the "125 main" between the Pro motos. It wouldn't have to be long, maybe 4 laps...Talk about exposure!

That would be cool. And don’t think Star would show up with anything underpowered!

All that said, if anyone wants one of the 22 YZ125’s I would highly suggest you put a deposit down now. They will not be easily available. This is a time where having a good relationship with a dealer comes to mind.

It would be cool, but it's not likely Yamaha would homologate a 125.

We need a 125cc National Championship. Before the haters chime in and before DC opines that there's no time in the program, consider these positives:

-It wouldn't have to be televised.
-First moto could run at 12:00, Second moto at 5:00.
-It could be a great stepping stone into the pros.
-Riders and promoters want it to happen.
-Manufacturers who don't make a 125 could pretend that it's not important, since it isn't on TV.
-Yamaha, KTM, Husqvarna and Gas Gas would all benefit from the exposure.
-The smell of premix. Come on!

I would think a Star rider could run well into the top 20 in this depleted 250 field, considering Steinke had an average finish of 29th in his last full season on a 125

Well into the top 5, fixed.

Well, not any Star rider that they would actually put on this type of assignment.

Considering how depleted the 250 class is, a top 15 isn’t out of the question. Still giving up 10 HP to a factory 250f is tough

Did he only score points in one moto the entire year?

I think James is the only one who could do Larocco's Leap this year on a 125. I remember Ricky showing off. He was whipping it over Larocco's Leap on his CR250. Good Times!!!! As mentioned above, its tough to give up at least 10 hp to the 250F.

Correct.

And he has only scored points in three motos (two of them being his nice day in the mudder at LL last year) in the three years on a 4T. He is kinda a mid 20s position guy, and I would guess the 125 handicap for him was probably about 5 spots.

I case you didnt notice, there isnt any 'between the Pro Moto's'

But i agree, a local hotshot's 125 race gets my vote.

I'd be happy to see it after the Pros then. Who doesn't want the chance to race on the same track and same day as the Professional guys? It would be a chance for kids that might not have the money or means to go to Loretta's to get some recognition. Just a thought....

I’d rather see them being back morning qualifiers than a 125 race

They already had this. It was the 125 All Stars. And the main event was right before the pro motos. There was a qualifier on Friday's. Hopefully it comes back.

It would be cool, but it's not likely Yamaha would homologate a 125.
And the 250 for that matter. Been a few years since they homologated either of them.
