Hello Vital Members, mostly Pro Moto Mechanics or Colorado knows. I am wondering how a Stage 2 Hot Cam for a 2013 Honda 450 will be beneficial or not for the Lakewood track? Is it best to have bottom end or mid to top at the track? If you need more info please contact me at Wcarroll28@q.com.

Looking to get any advice on these cams to get the bike dialed for Lakewood this coming National, or any advice for a 2013 Honda 450 for that matter at 5600'
Kind Regards
Bill

I'm sure somebody has tried these cams or heard good or bad about them?

I have never used them, but my local mechanic who's judgment I trust said that hot cams or any of "hot" products (rods, cranks etc...) are of inferior quality compared to OEM. He had a customer bring a hot cam for him to install and he said it was just not a quality product and would recommend steering clear. That being said, I see lot of magazine builds where hot cams are used and I haven't read anything bad. Free advice is worth what you pay for it I guess Smile

Thxs Big, From the emails I am getting the cams are hit and miss, some folks like the different power and others are afraid of what might happen if they use them. I think Broc is going to keep it in for the National because he likes what he's feeling, I just hope it doesn't detonate.

Why would it detonate?
I too am interested about the stage II cams or other mid/top cams (for a different bike though 12 RMZ250) so if anyone has any experience with them then that would be great to hear

Anything that's not OEM engineered is an add on and not what the" Manufacture ordered", I remember back in the 80's- 90's I had my 125 Moded that I had to replace the bottom/top end at least five times a season to keep it from tying up.
I don't know much about these four strokes these days but I am sure any mod has it's fall backs as well. Just hope it's just the same as back in the day...or better...Smile

Any info from higher ups would be greatly appreciated

I have the Stage-II in my 2012 CRF450. It is a nice mod. It adds top end pull and overrev that the CRF needs badly. Allows me to keep the bike in 3rd on straights where it fell flat before and demanded to be shifted to 4th.

I also have the JE 13.5 piston. It adds grunt and better pull everywhere.

Top it off with an exhaust and a map to suit and it is a whole different bike.

I've never heard of the Hotcams being inferior quality. They are quite popular and pretty widespread so I'm sure you'd hear about it if they were junk.

I dunno but I have a 2004 RM-Z 250 with an Athena 290 big bore kit, hot cams stage 1 intake and exhaust, hot cams crank. I harescramble and motocross the bike, and I've had no problems.

I tried both the stage 1&2 in my 05 crf450r and liked both. Never had any problems with either and ran them for years.

Had a hot cams stage 2 cam in my 13 honda 450, along with, pipe, remap, higher comp. piston, headwork, hinson clutch assy ect. If you are trying to qualify for a national your honda is going to need some additional HP.
